The wife and I are currently building a teardrop trailer so we can do some heavy-duty traveling and yet sleep in comfort. You can read all about it on her blog. Her flickr stream is here if there are any craftsmen who like some fine woodworking. My job is to basically hold things in place while she attaches them, hand her tools, and fetch her drinks.

that looks like an ambitious project for sure. wood is an interesting material, but a bit on the soft side. like mine petrified.

You guys are very brave, looks like she's doing a great job. I used to do some woodworking but now I'm like KD, I like mine petrified too.

That's a really cool project. Looks like its coming along well. Did you draw the plans up yourselves, or is it like a kit? I do some work with model airplanes that has some similar structural design only on a smaller scale, so I know how tedious the work must be. Looks like something I would want to try though sometime in the future. Good luck and happy building!

Rocky, yes, the hatch will lift up and we will have a kitchen with cabinets, a small fridge and a small oven/stovetop. In addition, we will have a little powered 6-pack cooler built into the armrest in the middle so we don't always have to get out of the tear for a drink.
The wife thought up the plans all by her lonesome. It is hard living with a genius who is as smart as she is artistic.

It looks really neat! Earthdog and I watched a show on the Travel Channel that was all about the tear-drop trailers and the clubs people were in that had them. The only drawback was extra tall people weren't very comfortable sleeping in them. Be sure to post a photo of when it's all done and when you're camping out in it. Have fun!

As the Owner of a 32 ft travel trailer (with a 14 ft slide) I can say that I'm impressed!!!!! I miss the old days (read pre $3.00 a gallon gasoline) when we would hook up the trailer and GO!!!!! Being seasonal has it's advantages- but I do miss the travel days- Please post picks as this project comes along-

Oh very cool! You can pull those with just about anything right? And never underestimate the importance of the drinkbringer. I'm pretty sure there's a parable somewhere..."Blessed are the drinkbringers, for they shall hydrate the earth".

hehe i like that parable. The wife stands about 5'9". Ours is bigger than the average TD because we don't want to be claustrophobic. In fact, while many TD folks will build cabinetry up by the heads, we aren't going to do it because we want the extra headroom. And it is just wide enough for a queen-size mattress (which we will be able to slide out the back in the winter so it doesn't get icky).
It will either be pulled by our Explorer Sport Trac or we may go insane again and actually BUY a PT Cruiser GT Turbo.
One of the things that really drew us to build one was going to one of the gatherings around here. Some of the nicest people all sitting around their TDs talking shop and comparing notes.

Just an aside because I sincerely don't want to hijack your thread...but you'd have to be crazy to get a PTCruiser. I know...I own one. Bought it brand new three years ago...and though I love the styling and the room, it has less than 70,000 and has needed a new fuel pump, new transmission, and new a/c all in the past year. I will never ever buy another freaking chrysler as long as I draw breath.
BTW, if anyone wants to respond we should probably start another thread.

My boss is on his 3rd PT (he gets the woody kits for em- and those WIDE whitewall tires) His first one cooked 2 engines and had the Cataliytic converter replaced 2X (with only 60,000 miles) the second one was ok but he did not like pick up on it (seemed real gutless to him) the one he has now had only 10,000 miles on it- but it has already eaten a battery- had the remote starter replaced- new brakes, and a new radiator-- Plus if you have ever driven one for a great distance (more than 100 miles at a stretch) they get terribly UNCOMFORTABLE- I say stick with your Sport Trac- You can put in more supplies- and haul home MORE ROCK!!!!!
