well went to the doctor yesterday...went for help for helping me quit smoking...then things turned kinda bad....my joints on my right hand had started to grow over the last few weeks...became kinda gross looking...grew into weird shapes..pain was unbeleivable on diff days...to the point that i couldnt use my hand for no reason. my sides had started to hurt..right below my rib cage...both sides...they have been hurting badly...all of this took place in a few weeks. he beleives that my kidneys are shutting down...all from somekind of things building up in my body....he said my joints in my hand...are being disfigured by deposits of something called chronic tophaceous gout...or something like that...they may be called something else. he said he has never seen such a rapid on set of this in a person my age...so im a little scared..and he is actually going to meet me at the hospital monday morning...for more tests...he said if anything about me gets worse over the weekend ...call him right away...and he will meet me at the hospital. pics of hand clickable.

I wish I had some kind of advice, but I've never heard of anything like that, but you will be in my prayers and I hope that come Monday they figure it out and that it is treatable. I'll have to look those terms up on the net.

cpdad: A taxidermist buddy of mine had a sudden onset of that kind of swelling of the joints and it turned out he had caught Lyme Disease from ticks that crawled off dead deer. If you've recently been in the out of doors where you might have encountered ticks, or even out in your yard if you're in a tick area, you might query your doctor about being tested for Lyme. You can check the CDC Website on Lyme too to see if any of your symptoms match this disease. Lots of doctors overlook it. They did with my buddy.....mel

cpdad, I've had several acute flare-ups of gout, but they are nothing like the symptoms you describe. I think it is only well-advanced cases of gout that can cause those kind of knobby bumps like in your pictures. You should have experienced lots of chronic and very painful flare-ups, typically in the big toe joint, long before you would get that kind of hand inflammation. I'm no doctor, but it sounds like something other than gout to me. But obviously you've got something wrong going on, and I do hope they get it figured out and treated ASAP.

Kevin I am so sorry you're suffering and will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully you have a doctor that know's his stuff and will test for many things to correctly identify the problem. Please let us know and keep us informed on what's going on.

thanks everybody...what bothers me the most was the way he was acting and talking....see..we arent friends..but we are on a first name basis...he has been to my house a few times over 16 years or so years...he has used our masters badges when no one else wanted to use them.
after prodding... feeling.. listening to my body with that cold thing...and a million questions...he says he will be right back..before he came back the lady comes in and tells me to be at so and so..monday morning...i need some tests...and they got me in first thing.
he comes back in and says... get this now..his words... kevin i cant give you anything for the pain in your hand right now...i need to adjust your blood pressure medicine its 180/120 again..but im not right now...dont drink any beer (that hurt) and for the time being smoke all you want....that from the man that has been on me for years about it.
doc your a nut...hahahahahahahaahah.
don...that is exactly what he said is so odd about it..never before any thing like this for me...he said there deposits building up in the joints...and they are continuing to build up and up...he seems to think that if the are doing it here...they are building up in my kidneys to..when he seen my hand...first thing he told me to do was take of my shoes and pants...and started asking about what you said.
lizard...thats exactly what i gonna do....you are right cant hurt a lick.
thanks everybody.

My thoughts and prayers are with you too, be sure you're comfortable that you have an accurate diagnosis before they're done with their testing. I think sometimes Doctor's forget to think about how what they say might sound to a patient when they want to act quickly on something. I hope you don't have to wait too long for answers.

well.... did the doctor thing again today...actually 2 of'em..first thing this morning i got an ultrasound...after that was done.....he said he was going to get someone else to look at it with him.
then told me all of my blood work was borderline at best...this and that aint quite right...so i have more blood work thursday...after not eating or drinking anything...and chest x rays.
after the ultrasound thing...he sent me across the street to a throat doctor...told me to tell the lady my name...after i told the lady my name she took me straight back...no waiting....i was hoping he was doing me a favor...payback for the badges.
after the throat doctor looks at me for a few minutes...seems i have a lesion in my throat that needs a biopsy...chit i thought what else are they gonna come up with....he said he will do that thursday also....i aint never had anything biopsied before...so that sucks to.
so as of now they are telling me something isnt right with me at all...but they will find out.
so for now its more bloodwork...x rays...and a biopsy...and a bunch of waiting....my hand never even came up today...even though i can hardly use it...that seems to be the last of the docs concern right now...keep yaw posted.

Kevin, did they tell you when you'll be having the biopsy? Do not take aspirin or ibuprofin for now, use tylenol if you need pain relievers unless the doc gave you something different. I had been taking ibuprofen when I was diagnosed so they made me wait a week before they would do the biopsy because ibuprofen is just like asperin, it thins your blood. Tell them if you've been taking it. Aside from that, the biopsy itself isn't a big deal, prayers will be with you that it comes back normal.

Hang in there Kevin. Lots of folks here are sending up prayers for you so try to stay positive. It's important that you do...I'm a firm believer that a persons' attitude has a tremendous effect on ones health....I bet that Cher would tell you the same thing.

Absolutely! You've got to go right in with the attitude that whatever is ailing you needs to go, you just don't have time for it. Whatever it is, your doctor will find it and you WILL beat it!
