i have looked at a lot of the specs for the various saws online and see 1/3 HP motor; 1750 RPM faily consistently. but i don't know what size motor you have Billd and you would be running 220v? so i will defer to the other homemade experts.
you'd probably be better off with oil. i use water and coolant on my 6 inch, but they suggest any larger than 6 and you should use oil. they sell lapidary cutting oil, but some of the members in here attest to using baby oil among other things.
what parts of this site are you having difficulty, Billyd?
we are all here to help,
KD

Billy, you first need to orient the tinfoil hat North, North East. Ok, Running speed for a diamond saw blade is 1750 Krazy is not so crazy there. The motor speed is either posted on the motor, or you can find it from the manufacturer via the web. You will need to step down the blade speed from the motor. Any motor will work. Water is ok, for the blade, but lubrication for the blade and bearings is better. I use baby oil mixed with a little mineral spirits. Straight baby oil is real thick. Some stones also do not like baby oil. Turquoise, malachite, lapis, opal. They absorb the oil. I reccomend a lubrication bath rather than a drip for the lubricant. The blade will last longer. Good for you for making your own. It is what lapidariasts did before corporations stepped in. Homemade, you can make it better. I have also used engine oil. 5W20 for lubricant. It works but has an odor. I use alcohol to wash the stones with some success with turquoise. Great work, keep it up. You can do it.

The motor runs at 1450? That should be enough for light work, bump it up and get the extra 300rpm for large work, and constant cutting. You can lead solder leaks in a tank. Lead will fill a gap, and the stones are not going to get lead poisoning. I bet you can do it.
