Just learned that Steve Irwin was killed yesterday while filming an episode of Crocodile Hunter. He was apparantly swimming with stingrays, when he accidentally swam onto the top of a stingray. It spined him directly in his heart. Crikey! Not a nice way to go... S Website Media statement – 4 September 2006 Steve Irwin At 11am today, the 4th September 2006, Steve Irwin was fatally wounded by a stingray barb to his heart whilst filming a sequence on Batt Reef off Port Douglas for his daughter’s new TV series. Emergency services were called from Cairns Rescue Base and met Croc One, Steve’s rescue vessel at Low Isle on the Great Barrier Reef. The Croc One crew performed constant CPR during the thirty minute dash to Low Isle, but the medical staff pronounced Steve dead at approx. 12 noon. His producer and closest friend, John Stainton said on Croc One today, “The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest Dads on the planet. He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule!”

Such a tragic thing to happen. He seemed like such a nice, genuine guy who was absolutely passionate about what he did. So sad for his young family

Haven't told my daughter yet . Was kind of waiting for something to happen to that guy. Unlike many others I've seen, he genuinly did his own work without a lot of safety measures others use.

Man, that's too bad! I really enjoyed his programs and he seemed such a cool guy. His risk taking was bound to catch up with him sometime though and when your numbers up, it's up. Hey, if he had to go though, I'll bet his choice would be to go doing what he loved and not from old age or illness....mel

This is truly sad. Sometimes he drove me nuts because he was so wound up but he truly loved animals. I read that his manager figured he died instantly and didn't really feel much pain. It's a great loss for Austrailia and wildlife.

He probably felt next to no pain, poison injected straight intothe heart - wow!
I agree with Mel - this was just an appropriate way for him to go. Sad news for his family, wildlife, and his fans - but what a sign off!

I loved that guy as well as the Kratts brothers - he was passionate about all animals - but he did die doing something he loved doing - best way to go I guess
Gonna be hard to find someone with his passion & energy - his wife was just like him

Steve was pretty entertaining. I only watched his shows a few times but he was interesting in a car-wreck kind of way. Do remember that he made his living--and a ton of money--by relentlessly agitating/irritating wild animals. When I'd see him in action, I'd always think 'Dude, leave the animals alone---'. I do feel sorry for his family, they had no say in this. He went too far and got unlucky.

Slydog...I can understand how you would feel the way you do...but I don't agree with some of your sentiments. From what I understand, his wife supported every aspect of who he was. Yeah...he could be a little abrasive, specially when he got away from the scripted gig, but ya gotta give the guy props! No one did it like him & he turned on an entire new generation of kids who missed Marlon Perkins & the Wild Kingdom! He brought Austrailian flavor to the world along with "crikey." I'm sure, as his children grow older, while they will miss not having the warmth of his everyday love, the legacy he has left them will make them even more proud of where they came from...it would me!

I always felt a bit uncomfortable watching his shows - cos he was like - well - errmmmm to "alive"?
Does that make sense? He was too much for me to handle and relax down to. I couldnt relax and learn facts about wildlife from him because he was too much for me to handle.
So what does this mean I ask myself? Well probably it means that he was a better man than I am, as I couldnt soak up his information and what he could "see" in the world around him.
Fantastic bloke at the end of the day.
He could see the stunning things around him that I cant always catch.
Rest in Peace Steve Irwin and God Bless Your Soul - there arent many like him around.
