Where are people finding all these beautiful rocks? Not the stuff that you buy from the store, but there are pictures of folks finding stuff in different spots (beach rocks) I don't know about you, but my beaches have sand, weeds, driftwood & disgusting stuff brought in with the tide. I don,t think I've ever seen nice rocks at any beach! I know of a place around here where they have little inookshooks (eskimo markers in the form of a person) and rock sculptures on a little rockbed - could I just take a regular hammer (& maybe a chisel) to some of that stuff? :-/Is that legal? Watch me get arrested for damaging property…. ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png)

I did a search on MSN for "rocks of Kansas and found several places that I could go rock hounding here in KS. In fact I found out from my father that there are flint hills here in KS not too far from my sister. When the weather gets warmer I am planning on a rock hounding trip there with my nephew to see what I can find. I found that in northern KS there is jasper. www.kgs.ukans.edu/Extension/KSplaces/visitindex.htmlMy father also suggested doing a search for historical indian areas that would have flint and other rocks, because they used flint to make their arrowheads in other areas they might have use other rocks to make their arrowheads, ie: if they were close to valcano areas they might have used obsidian. Sounds like that would be something that would get you in trouble.
Ask around and find out if there's any gravel pits in your area, that's where I do most of my rock hunting. I also walk gravel roads, you'd be amazed what you can find looking along the edges.
Most of the lakes around me are like yours, nothing but weeds along the edges. I head for Lake Superior when I want beach rocks.

Tweet- STOP- You will be arrested and thrown in jail- What you are contimplating is probably very illegal- Now amazing rocks can be found in many places in canada- you just need to do a bit of research- Get in touch with the local colleges and talk to the geology departments- Often time they can steer you in the right direction (I have even been invited and gone on several Feild trips with them) If that does not work try your local museum often times they will have info on local rocks. If that fails- well hit some local creeks and such- Walk around and look for interesting stuff- You will be amazed at what might turn up!

Tweetie, if you are referring to those inukshooks in that shallow bay in the Ottawa River around Tunney's Pasture, those are made of limestone so wouldn't be any good for tumbling, plus I'm sure it would be illegal to disturb them.
You need to get into Canadian shield country. There is some nice Canadian shield just west of Old Kanata, along Richardson's Side Road for example. Don't know how accessible it is anymore, but as a kid I used to collect lots of quartz and feldspar there. Or, go across the river and go up into the Gatineau hills. That is old granite rock with a variety of minerals, though you'd want to find out what the rules are for collecting in Gatineau Park itself.
Or, get a surface geology map and head to areas where there is glacial till near you -- you'll find quartz, feldspar, granite. Most farmers would be happy to let you pick rocks from their fields before they plant in the springtime.
Or, next spring or summer head to Bancroft, Ontario -- "the mineral collecting capital of Canada". You can find all kind of different minerals and rocks there, and there are sites on the web that give you detailed instructions on how to get to various roadcuts, quarries, etc, where you can often collect for free, plus the websites list all the minerals you can expect to find at each site. Plus there is a big gemboree there each August. It must be less than a 3 hour drive from Ottawa.
Happy hunting.

Yeah I was talking about the one by Tunney's Pasture! You MUST be near me - or you were here and had a very memorable time near those inukshooks! ![:-*](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/kiss.png) Are you from around here? My parents are just about 200 feet from Gatineau park (so close the bears & deers come on her property to eat her leaves). That's the main reason I'm kinda scared to go in there (bears & wolves). I could chisel away at some of the structures in the Mackenzie King estate ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . My daughter wants to go rock collecting with me when we thaw out - she says she can't wait - I'm planning on getting some bear repellant (hoping it works too) and a leash for my son (don't ask) I'll bring a big bucket & toss it all in there.

I find a lot of good looking rocks of e-bay. I also search just about every rock shop internet site for good looking stuff.
There is a local rock shop (about 20 miles away) and I call them every week or so to see if anything good has arrived.
We also rockhound and trade with others on this site. Have done some real nice trades with others.

I dunno, maybe I spend a lot of time looking down or something, but I've been picking up rocks about everywhere I go and have done that since I learned how to walk, probly. Sides of the roads, paths in parks, you name it. The best overall have consistently been creek and river beds.

I joined the locla rock club, it has been great.
We go on rock trips all over the place aorund here, so between learning the spots, learning about the rocks, and the club having a nice little work shop with big saws, grinders, etc that club members can use.
There is a few of us that like to get together when ever we can and go out looking at different spots that look interesting, I have not got anything "great" but I have gotten some cool rocks, and am learning spots to find more as time goes on.

Gotta tell us where you are for collecting suggestions. If you're near Ottawa, head up to Bancroft for green/salmon and "peristerite" feldspar, rose quartz, sodalite, and a couple hundred others. Lake Superior beaches have some nice pure white quartz pebbles, mebbe some agates, etc. and Thunder Bay has lovely amethyst, if you ever go North for a holiday. Ontario has enough collecting possibilities for ten lifetimes, but you've got to be willing to make the drive and move the rock. Tons of great stuff in Quebec too.
Hammering on rockcuts is perfectly legal except where posted; just make sure you're not impeding traffic, or on like a six lane highway. I've never been terribly fond of roadcuts, too noisy and smelly; collecting with cars whizzing by my ear is not my cuppa.
Best suggestion is to find a local club; they're all online at the Canadian Rockhound; add a .ca to that and you've got the URL, or Google it.
Don't be shy about joining a club, it will be the best thing you ever did, you'll meet lots of really good people that share your madness, you'll learn a ton and have much fun. It's THE best way to learn about what's in your area.

I have heard of people (have not attempted . . . yet) going to mines and looking through the pilings. Also heard of going to where they are building new homes/buildings and just starting to dig for the fondations. (Have not done this either). Our kids are still a little young for me to take them to a mine or construction site. Somehow, I just don't think MOM would be too happy and the kids DCANNOT keep a secret. ![:-X](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/lipssealed.png)

They blasted out some rocks to make a new highway pretty close to where I live and I was told to go looking there - someone found a geode and he gave it to a friend to have his dad identify it, but he never got it back - he told me where to look for them - gonna go there this spring.
