Any thoughts of what kind of bird to get. Thinking about a Sun conure.

Never too cold to eat Ptarmigan! In warm weather, they stay mottled. In winter, they are white. Nice, plump, white, yummmm. As soon as we get our hands on a camera. We are finish coating the stucco on the foundation. The shingleing is done. Now to clean the house, fix the yard, make the front deck/stairs, and maybe even run our shop WITHOUT REDNECKS AROUND! I am tired. I am so tired I am not even sleepy when I have to run the shop the next day. I am four weeks behind in custom work. Our redneck carpenter is showing up tomorrow morning at 7:20 am. I have to get to the shop at 9:00 so we have to leave at 8:30. He sits drinks our coffee, and tells us about life. I found him a roofing job. The homeowner has a cute wife. She is someone who had heels that are so tall she is oxygen deprived. He will like the airhead. Maybe they can leave fish on their doorsteps. They still have not mastered using ice. We come home to a bag of fish in the sun, flies and all. Don't want to hurt his feelings. I told him but he has not comprehended it yet. Great carpenter though. Finish work is his speciality.

wiz: My wife has been into hookbills for 30years, although we're down to just a cockatoo now. I'd test the noise level on all the conures before you decide on one. We've had them, and my folks had a Sun Conure. All of them are annoyingly screechy ( friggin loud!). Shoot, all hookbills can be loud. My wife's cockatoo yells so loud sometimes I jump and bump my head *S*. Parakeets and cockatiels are about all the noise level I'd enjoy and they are way cheaper to buy and care for. If you want something big, there are larger keets like Indian Ringnecks etc. Actually, the budgies ( parakeets and cockatiels are great pets) In my experience all the others just make for huge vet bills and noice so loud you'll think your head will explode. Oh, and the larger birds' talking gets old too. One more serious alert. Never never buy a secondhand bird that talks. We had one once that a gal previous owner had kept in the bedroom while making love. Apparently she was loud in the sack because that friggin bird could be heard mimicing passionate yells all over the neighborhood. Others swear etc. beleive me, way not good......mel

I've had birds all my life! I would get a cockatiel or a ducorp cockatoo. They are the sweetest, most quiet of all birds. I use to have a goffin cockatoo that was a real screamer who came from a abused home. When she past away, I did a lot of research and found that the ducorp cockatoo are the most quiet, and gentlest of all cockatoos. I bought mine from Aves Aviay in CA and had her flown here to Iowa. She was well taken care of and beautiful. They still aren't very comman but are becoming more popular. There is only one or two other girls that I know of that have them. You won't be disappointed, but be prepared, they are not cheap!

Conures can be needy birdies and real screamers. You may want to think twice about that one. Another good idea is to get a Bird Talk magazine and read through it. You may be able to decide on what the right bird for you is from them. I do have some back issues for sale on my ebay store cottage style tiles very cheap! They are great magazines for birdie info!

does it talk wiz? my sister had a parrot and it was a noisey bugger but that's what i liked about it. i could sneak outside and ring the doorbell, the dogs would start barking, the bird would start screaming, my sister would start screaming, bro-in-law and my mom would join in then i could run back through the garage door and say "what in the hell is going on in here?".
by the time my sister figured out it was me doing this over and over it was time to head for home lol.

My dad used to own a pet store with mostly birds. Twice a day, when he first opened up and right before closing, all the birds would "go off". My gosh, was it loud! He had parrots, cockatoos, macaws, cockatiels. When I stayed over at his house, he had a cockatiel that would whistle two different tunes at the same time (he mixed them up). My grandma and grandpa had a conure, and yes, he was a screamer! Had a neighbor in the sixties that had a mynah bird. They lived across the street 3-4 houses up from ours and you could hear him whistle from our house! I love birds, too, but they need lots of attention as any pet does and like my dad used to say, the larger birds can out live you, so they can be around a long time! Good luck!

well so far so good. he is noise only when he sees us after get home from school and work. not that he wants to be held just that he needs more food. once he eats then he wants out of the cage. but after 10 minutes he wants back in. so things seem to be working out very nicely. kids at school have been telling my to boys that they have seen our lost bird this summer. in trees and drinking from puddles, i don't think he'll make it through the winter!

Jendays can be very noisy but glad to hear you're having a good experience so far. I've been around these darn hookbills so friggin long that I'm somewhat sensitive about all the noise I guess *L*. That's why I prefer raptors. Don't make pets but at least when you work with them they're nice and quiet for the most part....mel
