Every year in September, my hometown puts on a huge Fall Festival. People pack the fairgrounds for all kind of activities which include a car show, craft show, various music, bands and food.
One other highlight for the weekend is at the local Radio Control Flying field just north of town. They host a huge Fly-In that attracts fliers from all over the country. They assemble on Friday and fly all weekend for the crowds. The field is not large (about 200ft x 600ft) but they all pack in and there are usually at least 5-6 planes in the air at any one time. On Saturdays they usually have some of the manufacturer's Pros there putting on shows and performing stunts that are spectacular for such airplanes.
The planes must be at least 1/4 scale to fly and most are much bigger with wingspans up to 14Ft. The club does not charge an admission, everyone is welcome to stop out and check it out.
The neatest part is after dark. They fly by stadium lights for a while, and then at midnight, they add neon string lights to the planes and helicopters, then fly in the dark. Talk about UFOS! If you didn't know what was going on it looks like an invasion from out on the nearest highway!
The other fun part are the Jets. These models sport fully functional miniature jet motors and the speeds of these planes are unreal. It is not uncommon for them to hit speeds between 200 - 400MPH !! But they are expensive 'toys' and there is just barely enough room to fly them safely.
Here are some pictures to show you how exciting things are. Check out the size of some of these 'TOYS' !!
One of the fast jets... really cool!!!
