My husband is a fireman and he said there was a house fire in town last weekend caused by...a rock tumbler. That's pretty scary for all of us that don't think twice about leaving them running for weeks and weeks on end whether we are at home or not.

All the rock should be easy to salvage. Good reason to keep the tumblers on a concrete floor, if possible.

I find it hard to believe- Especially if it was a name brand (not some CHinese POS) tumbler as they are termally protected (shut off if they become too hot) - Maybe your husband is trying to scare you into dropping the hobby?

Ask him if it was an OTS tumbler or home made...
Sounds a bit suspicious to me unless there were extenuating circumstances or just a freak/flaw/failure with one unit.
Where my tumblers have to live, it would burn the whole place down lickedy split if the area caught on fire but I have confidence in my technical abilities and my maintenance regiment with them.

[glow=red,2,300]OK I'M SCARED.[/glow] Do you think this a troll? Ijust bought a 170 dollar tumbler it's in the mail. I'm just getting into this hobby. I bought a brand new Model A-R2 No. 115 -->Versatile two-barrel, 6 lb. capacity tumbler. DO you think this could happen with this unit.

You've got nothing to worry about, Crystalclear, other than the fact that you didn't do your homework before you bought that tumbler. If that AR-2 is a Thumler's you should've paid about $95 for it (last year's price).

Well, for your information. I paid 114 dollars for it. And I did my research because there were a lot more for much more. The other money was for an extra barrel and a large amount of GRIT. PLUS shipping. So there yeah yeah I didn't specify all that but still it's a new hobby to me so it's all in the same lot.

The guy whose house burned told the investigator he was having problems with the bearings on the tumbler and he had to oil them alot. But he forgot and hadn't done it in a long time. It had been placed by some flamable stuff so... puff. Up it went! Don 't know if it was a home made job or ready built, but I like the idea of putting it on the cement floor.
And CrystalClear...you will find as a new member that there's alot of BS sometimes that goes on here, but you will also find that the knowledge is unmatched and, for the most part, these people are really caring human beings.
And Stefan...my husband supports me in everything I do, so no he isn't trying to get me to drop this hobby. I submitted this thread as a reminder for all of us to be careful and that things can happen.

Crystalclear- I have the exact same Tumbler- The motor is Equiped with a thermal switch incase of overload- It has preformed Flawlessly in the 10 months (non stop) I've had it- So I would not worry too much- Carpqueen- I was pulling your leg- sorry- It is a valid point to make sure and keep on top of tumbling maintance- I keep a schedule- as everyone should- So I guess I should say Thanks for the reminder! Accidents do happen

A faulty clock radio almost burned down my house a few years back, it could be anything, anywhere, at any time. Why does it happen? Because it happens, roll the bones...
