I am getting a tour of the Centerville, VA quarry that has been around since 1930's and is still going. I think it would be neat, but I don't know what to expect. Is there anything I should look for or ask about so that I can appreciate my tour better? I really want to go rockhounding there but the guy giving me the tour said that it's illegal. I wonder if they just give away cool stuff. Yeah right!

What kind of stone are they mining there? Find out if they have a mine dump/tailings pile open to the public. Many mines do.
Also, you can search outside of the claim (if the land is public) for material. I'd be interested to hear what they are mining there though, enjoy the tour!

QUarry tours are pretty cool- Some will let you dig through the tailings- some won't- Some will let clubs work the quarry durning down time- Never hurts to ask

I will find out what they are mining and post it here check back in the future. Also I will ask other mines in the area and see if they will let me hunt. THANKS. LoL It feels funny saying that, it's like I'm asking for permission on someone's property to hunt for animals, BUT it's for rocks.

Fairfax mines traprock or diabase as it’s called by geologists – a dense, igneous rock with a greenish-black to bluish-black color. Formed by hot magma 200 million years ago, diabase is composed mainly of pyroxene and plagioclase. Other minerals lending it its green-black color are epidote (green) and hornblende (black). Fairfax diabase is also blended with a type of sedimentary rock found adjacent to the formation.
