It's so beautiful but I think I would shoot it with a shot gun, but I think that I would get educated about them if I would live with like you, maybe their is a better way.

Do your dogs have the anti-venom shot? I added that shot for mine after we had a small run-in with one in the mountains. We were lucky that that time it was a dry bite.
We're finally getting cold enough here on a regular basis that most of ours are either in hibernation or heading that way already.
Woops! Just read the other post. I HIGHLY recommend the snake bite shot!!!

I like snakes and have seeen them occasionally when rockhounding. I'd be unhappy if they were able to come into my yard, though, as I have 3 dogs. You should vaccinate your dogs, Jamie - it's supposed to lesson the severity of symptoms if they are bitten. I just talked to the Redrock people *who manufacture the vaccine* at a conference.
What do you do with the snakes when you "catch" them? Relocate or death? Isn't it a bit late for them to still be out?

I think it would be cool to get him stuffed in a coiled stance with mouth wide open and put a beautiful polished agate in it's mouth...

Let me know when the snakes and the scorps go into hiding, thats when I know it's safe to come off this mountain and go down there for rocks!
Actually I can take the Rattlers and the spiders, just can't stand the scorpions. Evil little things.

Hi Baz, The scorpions we have at our house aren't too little, the one Rodney just killed in our garage was almost 7" long. I wish I could of taken a picture of it before it got squashed. I have been stung three times now and it really isn't that bad, a bee sting hurts much worse. I'm very thankful scorpions can't fly though, I do enough running because of the bees and wasps.
Susan, I caught the snake I found last night, I have a hard time killing anything like that. I have a piece of PVC pipe that I ran a piece of wire down through then doubled it over so I can adjust it after I slip it over the snakes head. The pipe is 1/2" pvc so the snake has to be bigger than the opening in order for me to be able to catch it with my tool and this guy was at least 2" in diameter where I grabbed him with the wire. I just walked him across the street and back into the desert. I read in the news paper that Scottsdale has removed over 400 rattlesnakes this season, they are relocating the snakes instead of killing them back into the McDowell Mountains. Supposedly, once a snake has been removed from an area it won't return to that area. I have a feeling that they meant removed as in further than just across the street though. I think this guy was number 12 or 13? heck, I have lost count.

Nice Hatband lol, in all seriousness I admire your respect for life and each animals place in this world but Rattlers and people can never live in peace. This re-location will probably backfire on them when there becomes to many rattlers in the McDowell Mountains and natural food becomes scarce. I don't believe in caging any wild animal even a rattler so giving them to zoo's etc...wouldn't work...We just kill them. I know that sounds bad but I would rather take its life then risk anyone or their pets getting bit... November and late March are 2 of the worst months, just before hybernation snakes are cranky as heck and sluggish, being most deadly when they come out of hybernation with a full venom sac and a bad attitude.... They are attracted to your patio because it holds heat, they will also stretch out on roads at night to get warmth...

That's what I like about you Edog! No matter what the situation is...you always manage to think about how one of your rocks would look in conjunction with the subject! hahahahah!

Edog--do you know how to 'taxidermy' a snake? If you do--and want one-I can bring one for you this summer--frozen.

I don't taxidermy, but would love a snake stuffed so I could put a shined rock in it's mouth. I used to have a boa, got him when he was 12" long, he died 6 years later at just over 7' long. Back then, like 1993 they wanted about $100 a foot to taxidermy him. So instead he got a nice wooden box in the backyard...

How about putting picky things around the porch so they wouldn't go there? Does that work or are they so thick skinned they don't ming prickly stuff?
