Hehehe, typical kid. I have done the first one. The second one was a dud. The first one is pretty quick on growing. He might have some results in two weeks. The second one takes a long time. Good luck, mine is grown and dumb and dumber. He is 31, and thinks I am still in alaska. I have been trying to get him down to Floriduh to teach him diamond setting. He has no clue whatsoever. Oh well. Good luck to the two of you. It should be interesting.

I wish this had come up yesterday before 6pm cst. The program "good eats" on the food network explained crystals very well in a segment about fudge. I don't even want to try to go step by step for fear i wouldn't remember right, but perhaps someone has it on dvd? Maybe some of the info wouls help.

I did that, and it works. Start it soon if you want results in two weeks. Set everything on top of newspaper because this experiment will "grow" right over the side of the containment bowl! I'm not too sure that the end result is portable, it may collapse on the way to the classroom. Hopefully someone else knows more. You can do the second one, the Alum crystals, without the seed crystal. Just supersaturate (add to boiling water until you can add no more) water with Alum OR sodium chloride crystals. Pour the mix into a shallow pie pan so it evaporates quick. The slower it evaporates the bigger the crystals but you guys only have two weeks so a shallow pan it is! When it dries the crystal will be hard. Just don't get them wet or they will dissolve. Good luck!
