I totally agree with the title - "The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work". In my mind, getting out of the office is always a good thing. but, being on a river or lake with my fishing pole has always been better!
On my fall fishing trip, which I have been going on for the last 20 years, I had the best day of fishing EVER! One fish after another after another! On the fall trip of three days or so, if I hook a couple of steelhead (trout on steroids), I am a happy camper. This year we switched boat positions, I got the front and my buddy sat in the back. Sitting or standing in the front is a bit easier as the fly line can be stored on the bow of the boat, so the line doesn't get tangled as easy.
We didn't hook any fish in the first hole that we fished even though there were fish jumping all over the place. Usually when we see a bunch of fish jumping, they are usually beatup salmon getting to spawn.
The next hole down, I hooked three and landed two. For the life of me, I don't know why I didn't smile in the first couple of pics. Maybe, because I was in shock. I should have landed the second fish, but I was a bit heavy handed and the fish broke the line. The adrenaline was still flowing.
We mostly fished with flys, but the guide also brought some plugging poles. But, the funny part is that the guide didn't want anyone else to see us using plugs instead of flys. We tried pluggin until another boat came by, we "hid" the pluggin rods and picked up our fly rods.
In the next hole, I hooked another fish on the first cast, with the other boat right behind us! This was the fourth fish of the morning!
I remembered to smile in this one!
My buddy also had a good day, he didn't catch anything in the first two holes, but in the third hole, he caught 2 or 3 fish. I tried to be a bit more gracious when he hooked a fish. I would reel in my line, sat down to relax and either shared a smoke with the guide or ate some lunch. My buddy on the other hand threatened me that if I didn't land the fish in a hurry, he was going to start fishing again. Yes, he was joking.
The guide has a home right on the river, while passing by his house, we found a rod case floating down the river, so we picked it up. A short while later, a very small boat came down the river. While lining (walking) the boat down some rapids, the boat over-turned and they lost all their gear. Needless to say, the guys were very happy that we recovered their fly rod, which was custom made for the dad by his son.
In any case, right in front of the guide's house, we nailed a few more fish. Again, because I was a little heavy handed, I lost a nice fish when the hook on my fly broke. The flies are about a 1/4 inch long, these fish weigh between 5 and 8 pounds!
