Alas, yes, in a perfect world Sir Dan....in a perfect world. I don't think deportation of how many millions now, is the answer.
I teach immigrants from Africa Anatomy & Physiology as part of thier nursing program. That's one of the things I do. Each semester, I receive word that a few need to leave class a particular day in order to become citizens. These people have faced all the hardships you described, some worse, some MUCH worse, yet they go through the system to become legal citizens. I spoke to one of those individuals about their feelings regarding a general amnesty for the illegal aliens here and I must say that they had a few choice words about it, some spoken in a language I certainly never heard before.
Now, that's an opinion about the subject from a person that's about as far remove from a west texas redneck as you can get let me just state that as plain as I can.
The issue of the illegal alien's status in this country is a very, very large one, one that is laying just under the surface and unless it's dealt with much more responsibly, and fairly than it has been so far, this country will further split apart.

Personally I don't care if immigrants wants to better themselves. Just do it legally, otherwise ship 'em out. Where I work here in Wisconsin, lets say out of 100 contractors that we deal with on a daily basis, 90% of them have an all Mexican crew, if I am lucky, only one of the 7/8 on the crew can speak enough English for me to understand how and where they want the concrete. The ones that can speak some English say how they wish they could find a American chick to marry. Out here they get a social security number from the Spanish center so they can get work. My wife sees so many of these illegals get a SS# and when she checks the number, finds out that they bought it and is registered already to a person in another state. My wife can't do anything about it, because of confidentiality BS laws. All she can do, is when she talks to the person with the legal SS# is tell them where to go to get help. It's kinda too late, when for the last few years they get screwed up with the IRS for not reporting all the income that was paid on that SS#. The IRS won't help the American track down the illegal using their number. Where is the Homeland Security in all that? When I crashed my Jaguar, I hit a couple that were illegal they own a home here and 4 other cars. They tried to sue me with a injury attorney. I told the attorney that I didn't think an illegal could sue a citizen of this country. Key word being illegal! The couple had sued Greyhound bus company and settled out of court and also sued someone for a dog bite, again settled out of court. I never heard from that attorney again. Like I said, do it legal or get the hell out!

Has anyone heard of The La Raza movement??? Man when Los Angeles was brought to a screeching halt last March when 500,000 took to the streets to protest the Bill that would quash any Amnesty and make it a felony to be illegal there was alot of movements come out of the woodwork., MeCha, La Raza, Azland??? Where they believe they are here legal and that a big chunk of the Southern United States rightfully belongs to them...I studied it all with great interest last spring as I was mad as hell... I learned, yes there are legit people who do sneak in to try and integrate as Americans. BUT I also learned that a fair percentage have no passion at all to be Americans but come here to make some quick money, reap what they can and back home again...I was shocked at how so many actually hated what the United States stands for...Now keep in mind I am not speaking for all illegals, a percentage...The La Raza Movement aims to have every City in America, and Public office, as controlled as Los Angeles is, and they claim by 2010 they will do it without firing a shot... Heres some sites that promote these beliefs: www.aztlan.net/www.americanpatrol.com/MECHA/MEChAindex.htmlBelow is a speech by a Former President that pretty well sums it up: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Guess who's teaching those folks in bombay universities engineering, physics, chemistry, etc.
Indian graduates from MIT, Harvard, etc. They are taught here by americans in a tongue they absolutely understand, and go back to their country and teach it to their folks.
That's fine, but we Americans need to always push the innovative envelop in order to compete. The same thing is beginning to happen in Asia. We'e going to have problems competing if we don't.

Rednecks & Hillbillies - www.scotshistoryonline.co.uk/rednecks/rednecks.htmlLW - I find it ironic that you point out the fact that India is the largest English speaking country. They have embraced a foreign language with no reservations which is one of the factors that has made them highly competitive in today's economy. I just want to make clear that I am not speaking of politics... I'm speaking of compassion, empathy & humanity. Our similarities are greater than our differences. Take heed: These are your brothers and sisters - Mathew 25: 31-46 I refuse to operate from a foundation of fear (hate). We can find solutions to these problems only if we remember that we are all brothers and sisters regardless of race, creed and color. It was false sense of entitlement which white Europeans used to justify the near genocide of the native American peoples... My ancestral origins in this country come from immigrants, as do your's... I'm not entitled to live here... I am privileged to live here. "The opposite of shame is not pride... it is humility" This thread makes me sad... lots of hate (fear). To answer the question in the subject line... "No, I don't hate"

And, uhhhh, not too sure about India "embracing" the english language. I might be wrong but it seems they were a colony of the British Empire for some period. English being the language of the Brits and all. BTW....in case you didn't realize this, you don't have to hate somebody else to want to protect yourself and your own family. There seems to be some confusion here, at least from my stand point.

I'm not entitled to live here... I am privileged to live here. ))) ________________ I respect your views from a compassionate base, I wish mankind worked that way in all respects. The Bible teaches us that but it also is very assertive in respecting the borders of other countries. Know this though, in the hundreds of protest by pro-illegals who many times waved the Mexican flag over the upside-down American Flag (A Distress sign of being over-taken) Citizens watched and let them do their thing. But almost every Anti-Amnesty protest was met with violence from beatings to rocks being thrown at them (US Citizens) There is something wrong with that... Its not so much fear or hate from my standpoint, its anger at our polices and the (turning of the head) for years while the problem has escalated to approx 15 million illegals here now. At a rally last year a Native American made headlines as the hundreds of illegals marched carrying the Mexican flag, with a loud speaker this young man got the attention of a few by saying that (when the Europeans first came here they made promises and took the land as if it was theres and we lost everything...I see now history does repeat itself.) So the reality is and I have seen to much reality. The illegals have hold a false sense of entitlement and ignore the laws and boldly flaunt them as they cross our borders. In a very hard hitting paper distributed in crowds at another rally it summed things up pretty clear. The Law Abiding foreigner waits years, fills out piles of paper and pays dues to become a citizen, or obtain a work visa. Yet every day hundreds cross the borders from hardened criminals to pregnant Christian women. My belief is we should have made sure our neighbors were secure before ever going anywhere to help other Countries as Mexico has a history of highly corrupt officials that does lead to a percentage of illegals. Many illegals are that way because their criminal record prevents them from entering legally. Below is a picture of what Los Angeles looked like last March during the marches against HR4437 (No Amnesty Bill) The theme was (Pass HR4437 and we will riot!!!)

Nope. Doesn't bother me a bit. Here are the things I hate:
When every six seconds a child starves to death.
When people drink and still think it's okay to get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
When the world sits on its hands while 500,000 people are murdered in darfur.
When a rock that's been in the tumbler for eight weeks goes into the polish and BREAKS.
Okay actually, in light of the first three, the phone thing and the rock thing don't seem all that bad. I guess, maybe, sometimes, a little perspective is needed.

LW - In case YOU didn't realize it... the word 'hate' is in the title of this thread and is repeated throughout several posts... my comment wasn't directed at you but somehow you felt that it was... and where in this thread does anyone say they are protecting themselves? From what? .. the Spanish language? You should be protecting yourself from those who would take your liberties away from you instead...
Rich (parfive) hit it right on the head... We are all SO worried about the Mexicans 'taking over' that we fail to recognize the real evil lurking... Did you know that the U.S. is in debt to the Chinese for trillions of dollars? ... Communist China! They Own Us.
I only see fear in this thread... fear of that which is different.. to me hate and fear are the same thing.
It is US foreign & domestic policies that have caused the current illegal immigration situation. I understand that it is not fair to those that have immigrated here legally. ...but our government allows this to occur and encourages it. After the hurricane hit NOLA last year and the rebuild efforts got underway.. FEMA did not hire domestic labor to rebuild.. they hired illegal immigrants... Why do they come here? ...because our government allows U.S. companies to hire them and does not address the human rights violations which occur in the countries of origin.
Since the hurricane Houston has taken the bulk of the refugee population from N.O. and has since seen it's crime and murder rates rise drammatically... no.. it's not Mexicans we should feel the need to be protected from, it is ourselves!
We created this situation because we are greedy... We want cheap luxury and are willing to sell our very souls to obtain it..
I'm beginning to think Doc is right ... All of this non-sense must be the work of the Electricals because I thought American's had more sense then that... .. ...Got your battery in?
Canadians don't seem to have a problem with 2 languages...
India has 21 different languages
And yes... India was a colony of the British and obtained it's independence in 1947... While Hindi is the official language... English is also an official language as well... it was specified as such in the Indian constitution after independence was obtained. I would say that India HAS indeed embraced the English language regardless of where it came from..
I work with many people from all over the world and I do not fear them I embrace the diversity and I am better for it...
There are 150 Texas members of the House of representatives 22 are hispanic... I guess it won't be long before they are running things huh? California's Governor isn't hispanic... where the heck is Arnold from again? ...All this talk is just so much mis-informed paranoia propagated by the media & our government... and we are blinded to the more pressing threats... we are constantly mis-directed and mis-led..
Open your eyes to the truth.

Compassion be damned. And cancel all the smilies...
Illegal immigration is not an issue of compassion, it is an issue of economics and security.
We are talking about at least 12,000,000 illegals here now, some estimates go as high as 20,000,000. They get amnesty, bingo. 12,000,000 people become instantly eligible for the considerable government dole. Social security, welfare, medical care, whatever government freebies we are foolishly throwing out there, will be bloated with millions of new recipients. Someone's got to pay for all that.
One in seven Mexican workers works in America. Why should we use up compassion on another nation's citizens when that nation has encouraged them to leave and ignores their own problems? Sorry, no compassion here. Round the illegals up and send them home. Shoot them if they try to come back.
Shall we go into security? Islamists are now entering the southern US from Mexico, can anyone guess why? We're not paying any attention to the southern border because both parties want a share of the millions of votes these potential new citizens will have. The politicians have sold us out to keep themselves in power.
Wait and see. Will President Bush commit a real impeachable offense and sign the amnesty bill that is coming? I'd bet a paycheck on it. Then, you'll see that "select 1 for English" crap when you walk into a voting booth. At least for a few years, when you'll have to select 2 instead.

Steve Bitterbrook, You are very correct in that alot of this mess spells one thing (VOTES!!!) When the McCain/Kennedy Amnesty plan was announced they were promised the Hispanic votes. Bush has danced around the Amnesty Bill for a year now. It actually had the Whitehouse in a deadlock for almost a month while all the hundreds of thousands protested and threatened riots if the HR4437 passed. It was a REAL threat, as Bush would say (Make No Mistake About it) The Rodney King riots would have looked like a small street fight compared to what would have happened if we didn't cower to their demands. Our own National Guard was forced to flee their post on our borders when they came under attack last week. They were not allowed to return fire...Threat??? Yes its real... Economics, very real. Large scale industry needs substantial fines for knowingly hiring illegals. Hurricane Katrina is also a good example whereas US Citizens were taken off the re-building jobs when the illegals were directed there...So yes Blarney I see exactly where your coming from. The Government can not turn its head to what it chooses, it must enforce all laws... Steve your right too, I'll bet a paycheck that the Amnesty Bill gets passed. The La Raza has aimed to make March their first Anniversary and plan to do recaps of the LA Marches...How fast can United States citizens mobilize in an emergency??? It took 4 days for Hurricane Katrina. It took La Raza just a couple days to bring Los Angeles to a dead stop....So I do belive in some preventive measures as I have seen to much and its not propoganda, Not when they can shut down one of the biggest cities in the world when they don't get their way...
