What a pain in my big fat, hairy, pimpled ass! I took my car through emissions testing, and it failed. I did my fault codes on the car and I only get two codes, one says O2 sensor stuck in the lean position and the other code says O2 sensor stuck in the rich position. My car only has 2 sensors, thank goodness. So at $85 a pop I get both sensors. Warm the car up to get a little heat through the exhaust so the stupid sensors will come out easier. Well, I find the little buggers, they ain't in a easy place to get to either, wires and pipes everywhere. You would need a hand the size of a two year olds to get in there and then it would be a tight fit. So I go and look for a 7/8 wrench. All my friggin wrenches are way to big to get into that tiny little space that the car manufacture thought would be so convenient to put the little spark plug looking things. I'm telling ya, I'm beyond pissed by now. Even if I can get my wrench on the damn thing, there is no room for swinging the wrench. I'm ready to throw a wrench through the windsheild by now. I have to get these in and get back to emision testing by the 27th or I have to pay extra money. I called a mechanic friend that owns a shop and he said he would charge me $75 to put my own senors in for me. What a friend. So I had this idea, Autozone has this loan a tool thing. and I call them. I'm going to go pick up a O2 sensor tool tonight and try it again in the morning. It sure doesn't help with the temps around 20 degrees either. If the car doesn't pass emissions after I change the O2 sensors, I'm going to jail for running over the state tester guy... If it ain't one thing, it's another... Thanks for letting me vent

Hey Jimmy, the way to solve that problem in to just drive older cars! My CJ-7 will qualify as a "vintage automobile" next year. Once they are 25 years old, most places don't subject them to the pipe tests. If they did, I'd be in trouble! Some counties in Michigan have pipe tests, but I've avoided them so far. Only need one more year.

they sure do in NY, we had to sell our 1996 Neon because it wouldn't pass the emission test because the computer chip kept coming up:
"sensor not ready"
we tried all sorts of daft remedies and urban legends to get it to pass, but no. the dealer said he could give us a waiver after we spent $400.00 bucks to fix it....haha, we sold it for $500.00 and walked away from it. the car had less than 30,000 miles on it and it was a great little car....sigh.
thank you New York State!
best of luck, eDog!

I have had to deal with emissions testing in Calif., Colorado and Wisc.! There's only 7 counties in SE WI that requires emission testing (because we are in between Milwaukee and Chicago!) The county to the West of us doesn't have emission testing. You have to spend $500.00 or more to a certified emissions mechanic before you can have the test waived (if you can't pass it). It's a pain when your car doesn't pass. Earthdog's has to so through the roller test (where they drive the car up to specific speeds) because of the year of his car. They just plug mine in to a computer because it's a little newer than his. We always see cars driving around that look like pieces of junk with smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes and wonder how they pass. One trick people use is to register their cars in counties that don't have emissions (they use a friend or relative's address in that county). I really wonder how much it improves the air quality with these tests, especially when there's always a way around it.

I hear ya Earth- My old DOdge Dakota has had an O2 sensor problem for years- It is a moisture thing (the damper the weather the more likly it is to "blow codes" My mechanic taught me a nifty trick that worked for 2 years (then I took the truck off the road) clean the Spark plugs about a week before the inspection- also spray the plug wires with WD40- then reset the sensors (for me it meant disconeccting the battery) often times it is enough too "fool" the Oxygen sensors. Good luck with yours E-dog

Man, it's cold out there. I finally got them in and the wires spliced. Reset the computer and checked the fault codes, only code I got now is that the battery was disconected. We'll see tomorrow if I run over a state tester guy or not.
