Go here: www.cfmsinc.org/manuals/slidenvideo/F13/F13web/F13.htmScrool down to the jasper and hematite- I was spinning some of this and It is very cool- But the hematite was messing up the pre polish stage so It had to come out- I do have some more rough that I am gonna do by itself- but I thought this stuff was real cool looking! The banding is so great and only gets better with tumbling

I bet that is beautiful polished up. Isn't hematite softer than jasper? Do the hematite bands grind down faster than the jasper? Tami

Not really- It is softer but does not seem to grind down quicker- of course the stuff I have has widder jasper banding- OK tonight when I get home I'll fire up the scanner and see if I can get a good scan of the rough and the work in progress!

I have this stone that I'm saving for the day I have a saw. Jasper and hematite mixed polishes beautifully. I've done some smaller pieces but don't want to break this one just to tumble, the lines are too nice in it. It also has some small lines of quartz in it in a few places. This one weighs 3 lbs 4.4 oz, it's a really nice chunk of rock. Cher

Thanks, this is some of the stuff I find locally, although really nice pieces like this are few and far between. I've got a big 17 lb piece that my grandson found for me. That's going to be my first attempt at cracking rock as soon as the snow is gone.

What do you mean it made a mess of the plastic pellets? I use pellets in with mine all the time.

Ahh it turned them all black- and there was a bunch of floating crud on the surface- I only had those 3 chuncks in with some other stuff- so I pulled them out to save with the rest of the rough I have. I'm afraid to use the pellets again as they seem pretty stained!

I have pellets for each grit and they all stained after the first use. I sometimes get some kind of black stuff floating on the top of the load but it hasn't affected the rocks getting polished at all. It seems to wash off pretty easy, whatever it is. I don't know if it's something from the hematite or not.

I've got a little of the stuff Cher has sent me in the tumble now. I never had a problem with the red/black stuff comng off till I recently put the dremel and saw to it. What a mess! I didn't really know what I was working with untill I had to keep wiping red gunk off the saw/drill as I worked. What I'm tumbling is going to be very nice. I, of course, will post when it's done.

The red you get from hematite is iron ore, can make some nasty stains if your not careful.

Stefan, I put mine in zip lock bags marked with each grit. The first thing I do when I open a barrel is put the pellets in their bag so I know what they are for. You don't want to use them on different stages. By the way, the one I have pictured here is really a nice piece, I don't find nearly as much like that as I'd like too. I find a lot like the ones you have, they generally tumble very nicely. I did find out one thing about tumbling hematite. It will stain other rocks if they have fractures in them. I tossed a few pieces into a barrel of rough that had some quartz in it, it's not pretty. Cher PS ... I'm talking about plain hematite, not the mixed stuff like in your picture. I toss that stuff in with everything.
