A jewelry forum I'm a member of is disentigrating because off-topic posts have been outlawed. What got the hoo ha started? Somebody wanted to chat about gardening. So people are leaving and getting threatened by the mods over this?
What the heck is wrong with people? One of the things I like about this forum is the off-topic section. I love the joke threads. Even in the lapidary threads everybody still acts like a big family and if someone makes a comment that isn't completely about rocks nobody says a word about it no matter what section it's posted in.
I haven't been here very long but I'm starting to really appreciate you folks. Well, I'm off now to see if I've been banned. I got irked last night and had the gall to say they're following Ebay's decent into the dark side. This could be interesting.

LOL - I like the part about ebay. I've been there. One of the first boards I was a member of I was banned for sticking up for someone who had the gall to disagree about the meaning in a book. It's a different experience.

I haven't been banned--yet--but they are saying that I was bashing an Austailian designer, which is bull. I admire her work. I asked them to show me where I said it but surprise, surprise they couldn't find it. The new person that wanted to talk about gardening got disgusted and quit after the flame war. Took less than 24 hours for them to drive her away.
Awww, heck with those crazy people. This forum is way more fun anyway.

I am not a member of that jewelry forum. Honest! I didn't start anything over there. It sounds like a koi forum I know, called koiphen. If you stick up for someone, they ban you. If you are a member of newtcity forum, they will ban you. Funny thing is they still keep you as a member to keep their stats up..

I'm a member of Hard Core Sledders, and if you want to see life in a war zone! It's gotten a lot better now, but wow! This forum was the first one that I had ever participated in, and man, what an eye opener! Talk about people sniping at each other and bashing each other. For a long time, I was afraid to post. New owner now, and for sure things are settling down. I agree with most others, this board is just about as tame as it gets. As a species, I'm not sure how we ever survived this long!
Ron
ps. Was watching "Walking With Cavemen" while I was typing this, and I found what they were saying quite ironic when I compared it with what I've experienced on some of these boards.

Lori - DON'T you believe a word E-dog says! OK, OK...I fibbed...but you all got to agree... sigh...most of our problems start & stop with E! (I'M SORRY! I just love to pick on him!) Truth is...people can be quite stupid. That includes us here sometimes too. But something unique goes on at this board. I can't quite put my finger on it as to why it's more harmonious here...maybe it's the rocks? Ya know...those rocks that have vibrations & energy...those damn rocks that everytime one of us have but when someone brings up the subject that theres some kind of energy with THOSE damn rocks...someone else has to point out that we are CRACKPOTS............................................................... Scuse me...I had gas! I feel better now! It's cause the people here are nice.

LOL, I got banned from a Chevy truck board a year ago for voicing an opinion to a moderator. Even if I could remember exactly what it was that I said, I'm sure that it was something that I'd never say here. ;D

Or maybe it's because when there's an argument someone says "There's a rock!"
And then everyone else goes, "Where?!!" And the argument is forgotten. lol
Seriously, the people on this forum don't seem to be wound quite as tight but then I don't think there's as many people in the business on here either. On the other forum they seem to be in competition for money and everything else too. I'm a pretty strange bird compared to them. They see stones as a way of adding color to jewelry. I see a stone as a thing of beauty all on it's own. The jewelry is just a creative way of displaying it on a human body. They've even argued that point with me. How odd.

Lori we are one big family around here and we don't have a buncha rules to follow. and everyone makes mistakes so theres no reason to point them out ---so theres and easy air about our forum yes we have spats here and there but they always seam to work out -- all thats needed to be a very welcome part of the family is common sense and a little respect for each other --- the way the world is (supposed) to be hahaha

One of the things that really attracts me to this sight and keeps me so addicted (and I do mean totally addicted) to it is the fact that everyone here seems like family. I haven't been here that long either, but by getting to know everyone through their posts and replies, I feel as if I have known them my whole life. People here not only share a common love for rocks and the hobby, everyone seems to go out of their way to accommodate and help each other with patients and understanding. There is never a dumb question asked and always more answers than you ever dreamed. I have learned so much from everyone in the last year or so - more than I ever thought possible about rocks. That is why I come to this place, sometimes 5, 6 or even 10 times a day - to know that I am with a bunch of people that really care about what it is I/we do and they still respect my/our many different opinions no matter what. This place ROCKS and will always be my home away from home!

As above
Rock polishing is a difficult Hobby it has many problems a bit of 80 grit in a polishing cycle to name but one
We have all been there not knowing where to turn to and have had help from the RTH Family . in many different ways,
We also have been challenged at some of the high gloss finishes produced and want to do the same,
In life the greatest problem we face is the person who knows it all, a polatition or anyone polishing rocks, Aragance and a "know it all attitude" is in many cases the base from which all arguments and dissagreements come from,
To be a learner and to share what we know is the secret many people outside of RTH need to learn,
Thanks to those who have been willing to do this . and to make this one of the best boards on the net.

As one of the senior citizens around here (since November 2003) I have been saying from Day One that this was far and away the best online community I'd encountered. Sniping and flaming are minimal and there is an atmosphere of trust. It's also an optimistic board, if the first thing didn't work, then something else will. Our folks were my major support system during one of the hardest times of my life.

One of the other things about this board is the SUpport for new ideas and new people- I used to be a rabid poster on the Metal detecting board- Always stood up for the new people and always tried to take the time to answer their questions- Then one guy burned me real bad- Set me up and left my CHeese in the wind- He was banned but came back under a different name- Well I recognized his style right away but my bringing it up POed a lot of other people and I suddenly found myself defending my actions- Have only gone back there once or twice- just to see that nothing had changed (lots of flaming, bashing, and name calling). But that does not happen around here too much (unless Earthdog does not get a calander- Long Story) I think mainly because we are all in the same boat (OK OK I realize the boat is just a garbage scow- but we are all in it together) and Our interests all boil down to something so Basic, ELEMENTRAY, Natural---- ROCKS- without em this board becomes Useless- With them we all have our Fix (Just a bunch of Happy go lucky addicts- that's all we really are) Oh and Earthdog (dang we are always picking on him- And me especially since he has an agate he is goann slab up for me) is a gardener- But it is ok cause It is a pond garden- and there are rocks around it (phew)

I went back there this morning and they are still busy ripping each other a new one. I used to think those people were so nice. But wave money in front of them and they fall apart. "My jewelry is better!" "No mine is better! Your stuff is crap." Blah...blah...blah... People are much nicer here, even in a teasing way. Heck, even the rocks are friendlier. I can't say I feel too motivated to chat with them anymore. I'll just hang out here and keep reading. It keeps me off Ebay. ;D
