I was playing around with the telephoto on my camera this afternoon, trying to get some pics of the birds at the feeders, when this downy woodpecker flew into an oak tree in the backyard and began looking for insect grubs under the bark. Got this shot of it, though an open window. Anyway, I thought it made a good pic of this rather timid bird. (12X optical zoom, plus iimage cropping to get super-close) -Don

Where's his red-head? Is it a different kind of woodpecker? We have some down here that are huge with bright red heads. They are the size of blackbirds!! I see them alot by the St. Johns River. That one is little and he is cute. Great pic!! Tonja

Great picture Don! We have a couple that come to the backyard every-so-often and they are neat to watch as they work the trees over. Almost gives me a headache to see how hard they hammer the bark looking for insects and grubs.

Thanks for the comments everyone. There's a few kinds of woodpeckers around here, but these little guys are the ones most likely to be seen in suburban backyards. They are supposed to come for suet, but I've never had any luck with that. They do seem to like pecking at the oaks though.
Tonya, we've got a crow-sized woodpecker around here that is all black with a striking red crown -- a pileated woodpecker -- but I don't think you'd find them in the city, well maybe in a large forested ravine or wooded park.
I've got 4 birdfeeders in the yard, and they are pretty busy from sun-up to sundown, especially when it gets really cold. Sparrows are the most common. I much prefer the chicadees and redpolls, but sparrows have to eat too. There's also some pigeons, magpies and blue jays, but they are awkward on the feeders so mostly eat the stuff off the ground that the smaller birds knock out of the trays. It's still a pretty young neighbourhood, so I don't have issues with squirrels yet. -Don
