There are people that are into gold panning around here. I've seen a few spots with little dust sized particles in the creeks but I look at them and think "Why?" I can't imagine trying to separate the dust from the sand. From what I hear that's normal. For me life's too short as it is.

My uncle owns a claim out in California. For a while there, he let his official business go to pot because all he cared about was the gold he might find. After some really messy family stuff, it's become just a hobby again. I could see the attraction of quick money at the sacrifice for environment in the less developed countries - the promise of a better life and all that.
Very sad.
