Just started at 4PM today. 10 minutes from the house. I'm psyched. I'm outta here. Anybody need anything?

WOW I am back! This one turned out to be heavy on gems and jewelry, short on hobbyists, rough, and equipment. Seemed like there was more natural stone jewelry than usual. A few new things in jewelry. Good buys on some carved onyx from India, really pretty. A dealer from MO got into looking at some of mine that I took along and he was impressed. Said he loves lace agate and studied my really unusual one with a magnifier for a long time. Nobody had ever heard of the place where I picked this up, which maybe isn't too surprising since it isn't on the AAA map, but they thought it sounded familiar from my description of the dirt roads and the Deliverance theme. Thought they might have been there once on a field trip.

Well I am sad to say the rock and gem show in Georgetown Texas was not very good. They did have some nice items there but not many vendors showed up. Wife picked out a very nice geode but I thought it was a bit pricey....$12.00 a pound. I will post a pic of it soon....

Pho, I'm sorry about your show. I was back to ours again today. Pretty funny, almost all the displays looked totally different from Friday night since by today, the vendors had had time to make their displays really drop dead beautiful. There was some really nice high end stuff at this show if you wanted jewelry and faceted gemstones, seemed like more than usual. Also I saw more really nice agate pieces -- slices, beads, cabs, etc. It was a good opportunity to see nice examples of some of the ones I'm always reading about and looking at the pictures -- Botswana, ocean jasper, Madagascar, etc. One dealer was selling various sizes tumbled stones each with an i.d. flyer and had a really good selection so I could pick up and really look at some of the ones I've been wondering about. Most had a really nice polish including some that I would have thought would be problems. He was selling them for $1 each for the most part. That includes the pea sized almandine garnets we are probably all familiar with. $1 -- I've got a small fortune of them at that rate! But unfortunately the dealer who usually shows up and has more hobbyist stuff and equipment wasn't there -- I recall they had a lot of old books including some of the tumbling ones, I was an idiot and didn't shop them a year ago when I last saw them.
Some of you old timers here may recall that last spring I met a woman at a rock show who had a batch of tumbled Montana sapphires that she did herself, in barrels. She gave me the recipe and I tried for 4 months and it didn't work. She was back and was really surprised it didn't work, so I'll try again. Why not. She had her tub of mostly smaller than pea sized tumbled sapphires for sale for $1 apiece.
I bought a few things, nothing high end.

Wow, still sounds like you had a really good time though. I would, just being able to go and look and get ideas.

Oh yeah, Cher, it's the greatest. I wouldn't have gone back for the second time otherwise! Actually, I almost always end up going twice to the shows.
