Amie, there is a cut in the highway outside Llano where you can collect llanite. I was in that area last year and went both down below the dam and the roadcut. Didn't find any below the dam but there is a lot to be found at the roadcut. They cut through huge llanite boulders to make the road. You will need a rock hammer and chisel to really get some good pieces though. Or do what I did and collect the scraps left on the ground from someones else's chipping off the boulders. Don't get very big pieces that way though.
The roadcut is on Highway 16N between Llano and San Saba. Can't remember how far out it is, but just about anybody in Llano could tell you.
Llanite polishes up beautifully. I have a large piece of it pre-polish now.
You can find all sorts of rocks in Llano County. I spent a month at Lake Buchanan last year and collected quartz along the lake shore. Along the railroad track in downtown you can find lots of marble, granite and felspar. I came back with a bunch of everything, plus driftwood collected from the lake shore.

Guess I gotta put Llano on my list of places to visit this summer....and that is realy not far from me.
Was up there two years ago looking for some gold before I get into rock tumbling...seems a return trip is in order...
Anyone want to make a weekend trip to Llano as a group?

Pho, I would love to go back over there and do some rock hunting. When I was there, I did't have a rock hammer or chisel yet, so I just had to pick up scraps off the ground. I would also love to go to Mason and hunt topaz. And Eagle Pass to the gravel pit to find Laredo Agate. And to East Texas for petrified palm wood. And to --------- Aw, heck, there's just too many places I would like to go to list them all!

Thanks for the great tips. We did not get to go. Maybe when it dries up we will go. I think it is going to rain again.

Hey all!
My family and I were up there at the site this past summer. Going north from Llano, you know you're almost there when you pass a cemetery onyour right. It's almost on top of a hill and just before you get to a rest stop on the left. So if you reach the rest stop, turn around because you've gone too far. You do find the stuff on both sides and it is hard as heck to break!
