Stupid Vibratory Tumber Questions « Thread started on: Feb 18th, 2005, 8:02pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi. I am new to the site, and new to tumbling, though not new to rockhounding. I received a (double 6# barrel) rotary tumbler for Christmas this year, and I'm working on a load of NM jasper (first grind, 2nd week). I have considered purchasing a vibratory unit just for polishing, and to add a bit of versatility. Yup, the bug has bitten. It is my understanding that the vibratory polishers will polish without changing the shape of the rock? Does this mean I can put a nicely distressed piece of petrifed wood into the vibe and have it come out much the same, though shiny? I'd like to be able to polish somewhat larger specimen rocks (golf ball to lemon-sized). Are any of you familiar with Gy-Roc vibratory units? Models A or B? I have a budget of $400. Any suggestions? Great website, by the way. Susan

Hey NMRocks, BearCreekLapidary uses a Gy-Roc Tumbler. I know he has a 10 pounder. Give him an IM or email him. I'm sure he'll help you. coinman@pld.comRon

Hello Susan,
I am slowly getting caught up on the board!
I have a 10 pound capacity Gy-Roc and (Model "A") I love it! I used to try to use the traditional method of tumbling stones (with my Gy-Roc) until I was directed in a different direction with the knowledge and suppport of this board.
No, the Gy-Roc doesn'y change the overall shape of the stones much, but, when it comes to fast and efficient means to polish the stones ... O can not ask for a better result that I have been getting lately.
I have had good success with some larger stones ... although a lemon sized piece might be too big .. I do not know .. as I have never tried to put one in my Gy-Roc that large before.
If there is anything else that you would like to ask, please do not hesitate to email me.
Sincerely,
John
