DULUTH, Minn. - Troy Lee Gentry, of the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry, has been sentenced to three months of probation and a $15,000 fine for killing a captive black bear. He also must give up hunting in Minnesota for five years.
Gentry pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in November. Under a plea deal, he agreed to forfeit the bear and the bow he used during the hunt near Sandstone. The 600-pound bear has been part of a taxidermy display at Gentry's home in Tennessee. He was sentenced Friday.
The bear was killed in October 2004 at the 80-acre Minnesota Wildlife Connection. Owner Lee Marvin Greenly sold the bear for $4,650 and orchestrated the hunt, which Gentry videotaped and edited to make it appear the bear had been killed in a fair chase hunt, according to authorities.
Montgomery Gentry, which includes co-singer Eddie Montgomery, are known for hits such as "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

And then they have the nerve to call themselves SPORTMEN. What a joke. Guys like that should be set loose in the woods and have hunters hunt them......

I agree, this sort of hunting is disgusting! I'ts amazing what some wussy boys will do to make themselves look more macho. I know lots of folks like bow hunting but I'm not much of a fan because I've found several dead deer with arrows sticking out of them that the hunters wounded, didn't track and left to die a slow miserable death. However bow hunting semi-tame, animals in canned hunt situations so you can stuff them and put them in your den is even more offensive. Bear are thick skinned game too and die hard. Bet the so called hunter had a great story of deady danger and heroism to tell all his buds too. Jeez what a diaperload he must be!.....mel

YES they ARE- We have one that visits the camp (I have not seen him yet) but they had to restrict bird feeders and such at camp because it was a free meal ticket- Everyone was all scared and wanting to shoot it- thank goodness the DEC stepped in and set down guidelines for the camp- He does not come around as much- but he has staked out his territory and camp is part of it- I get up early to walk the dogs and I'm always hoping to catch a glimpse of him!

Both disgusting and pathetic. Unethical and totally lame. The moron wasted a ton of money staging a snuff film because he's too pitiful to cut it as a real hunter but wanted to look like one. Geeez!
I remember when I was about 4 years old my dad and I went to a hunting lodge in Tenn to pick up my cousin that worked there. While we were there they brought in a guy that had been mauled by a boar. The guy knew ahead of time that boar hunting was risky, took his chances and the boar won. Now that's a fair fight! The hunter lived but had scars. He didn't even give up hunting. That's more sporting in my book.
We have bears here too. Up in the mountains there are little black bears. Well, little compared to grizzlies but they're still bears. In the summer when it's hot and dry sometimes they come down into this area looking for water. Every once in a while I hear of one being shot. I feel so sorry for them. They don't seem to do any more harm than raccoons. They just raid trash cans and look for something to drink. As soon as it cools off and rains again they head back up into the hills to get away from these crazy city people.

You know what's really sad. 1. This whole thing took place over two years ago and it's still all over the news and net. 2. They (the media) don't tell the whole story because it makes it far less interesting. Hundreds of people know all about Cubby, the bear that was shot. Do a search for "bear named Cubby" or Gentry and you'll find pages and pages on them but ( 3.) it took forever to find one freakin' site that lists the names of all the soldiers who have died in Iraq. Why is this more important than the number of soldiers who have died in Iraq? Why do they say "10 more soldiers died today" instead of honoring them by saying each of their names? Don't get me wrong, I do not approve of the way Cubby was shot at all, I cried when I heard about him but there are other things more important. Cubby's gone, no one can bring him back, they were WAY wrong the way they did it but one way or another Cubby was going to be put down. Things like what happened to Cubby make me sad this is what really makes me mad! 162 American soldiers and 1 Polish soldier that died in Iraq between January 7, 2007 and February 24, 2007. They left thousands of wives, husbands, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and best friends who will never see them again. That's really something to cry about. If anyone might be interested in knowing how many have given their lives in Iraq, this site is searchable by date, name, city/state, branch of service, and country. iraq.pigstye.net/wd1.php?sort=date

Cher: Totally in agreement with you about how the press chooses stories that they feel will generate the most interest and often ignores the sacrifices made by our troops. However, it should be pointed out that our troops volunteer to go into harms way and serve the country for a cause they believe in. They get to choose the warrior's life. Poor ole Cubby didn't get to choose being released into a situation he didn't understand, and was undoubtedly an incredibly frightened, unwilling sacrifice to some wussy jerks ego. Also the human warrior gets a weapon and a fighting chance. Ole Cubby just got to flee in terror until he was slaughtered. Really the two situations cannot be equated.....mel

I agree, Mel. Apples to oranges.
I hadn't seen this particular story before today and I thought it was despicable. Guess it didn't get a lot of attention down here in the Wild West. I'm an animal person, prefer animals to people in most cases. $15,000 is a slap on the wrist to someone like Gentry. What a Scumbag.
By the way, Cher...I have a family member in Iraq. War makes me sick, too.

Here's a fitting statement to the dichotomy of this thread. Let's send Ted Nugent to Iraq!

Been around Black Bears all my life. They are amazingly like humans. I think that's why they scare some people so much.

Cher, I disagree, I did a google search for names and came up with a boat load of sites with names of dead soldiers. www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/casualties/www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3359080/projects.washingtonpost.com/fallen/icasualties.org/oif/US_NAMES.aspxThis one is pretty neat, photomatt.net/2004/04/07/mosaic/These are to link a few on the first page of a google search. What does Ted Nugent have to do with this story? I can bet Ted Nugent is not in favor of canned hunts. Nugent is a ethical hunter, as was Fred Bear and a few other of huntings greats! I don't believe in canned hunts but if there are people willing to do the shooting there are people willing to set them up. Both should go to prison for a few years, not just pay a fine and get 3 months of probation. Hell, I put a few pictures of an ex-girlfriend posing and showing her boobs on a yahoo profile and got 3.5 years of probation!

Earthdog, the guy that shot the bear was supposed to be some sort of musical star although I've never heard of him. Ted Nugent is a rock star that hunts.
Bet Ted would treat the Iraqis better than that schmuck treated the bear.
