You're on the right track. This is exactly how you hand polish (no machine) a slab, but you need a separate piece of glass for each grit.

Lonewolf - If that piece of telescope glass is flat, use it. You don't need anything else . . . until you break it. ;D
I'll differ with Akansan here - that same piece of glass can be used through all the grits. It's easy to clean off.
How thick is that telescope glass, by the way? Just curious.
