;)well it took a while for that critter to get from Uncle Steffy's yard to mine, but i awoke to "oh my freaking deity, what is that smell.... ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) " and then i realized, it must be spring! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) we still have a lot of snow, so Mr. Skunk must still be up to his tail parts trying to get around in the yard....but he steeenky! ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) i hope he keeps on going (Tom and Herm, watch out, he's headed your way!!!) Ewwwwwww I haven't smelled one yet buy one of my nurses had one in her driveway in early February. Of course, he introduced himself to her little dog that ran barking right between her legs into the house. What you need is a badger living close by, they keep the skunks and bears away.

The worst smelling animals we get in Australia are the dead roos, wallabies, possums and foxes left beside the highway in the middle of summer. Nasty! So, skunks really do smell THAT bad? What sort of smell is it? I consider this question to be part of a cross-cultural experience for me! Mike

I can't even describe how bad it is. The spray gets in the air, burns your eyes, nose, throat and clings to everything forever. It's totally horrible and if you get it on your skin, it's practically impossible to get the smell off.

From my limitted experience, I only ever noticed a slight and passing odor in relation to the mere presence of skunks unless they've actually sprayed something/someone nearby. You really have to startle one to make it spray you, like the way some girls (and wussy guys to be fair) end up reacting when they see one. ;D We used to get them in our trash cans sometimes when I lived in the Okanagan. They would come creeping out of the wild bush behind the yard in the wee hours of the morning and scurry along the retaining wall between us and our neighbor's house then hop down onto the cans often knocking the nearly empty ones over. Then they dive in and claw away at anything they think is edible. I'm not sure if NY state skunks' differ from the rather mischievous but laid back pacific northwest skunks I came to know and love but after pulling skunk duty a total of four times, I never got sprayed once and the smell was not that horrible compared to the trash cans in late August with >100ºF heat anyway. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

You've never really met one then Lcars. Cute as they are, one could never say the smell isn't that bad. And I swear, it doesn't take much at all, like hearing a dog barking will make them spray.

For those of you who live where there are no skunks, a skunk is a small mammal about the size of a house cat. They are cute little guys but have a unique feature, a scent gland that can spray 10 feet or so (??). I would say the spray is like pepper spray or mace. It makes your eyes , nose, throat burn, can't breathe or see well and that's just smelling the odor, I can't imagine what getting the actual spray on you would be like. From the skunk's point of view, this is a very effective way of preventing the skunk from being eaten by a coyote, etc.
My personal experience is that every so often a skunk gets squashed on the highway. This stinks up the whole neighborhood! Or, you're driving and start to notice a skunk smell. A half of mile later when getting closer, your eyes are watering and your throat is burning.
BTW, skunks have been known to make good pets once the scent gland is surgically removed.

The sent of a skunk (the spray- their urine also has a strong odor- but not nearly as bad) Smells like rotted strawberries- in the stomach of a 10 day old roadkilled Racoon in the 100 degree summer sun- under a garbage can of rotted hotdogs that were thrown up by a rabid coyete 3 days ago TImes 100!

Stefan, you are making my sides hurt. I am having trouble typing this. So I am to understand, skunks smell...........bad?
It's good to know it's not just a cartoon thing.
You can keep your skunks. I'll keep my funnel web spiders, inland taipans, blue ringed octopus, stone fish and box jellyfish. Sure, they're as venomous as creatures can get...but at least they don't stink!

My mom always thought skunks smelled like really strong sour coffee. It does have a hint of coffee crossed with mace and a little battery acid wash. Honestly though they don't bother me unless they spray. There's a couple that wander by here looking for leftovers. As long as the neighbors dogs don't bother them it's fine.

Yep they stink and I will take a face of mace over being sprayed by a skunk any day.
To get skunk spray off yourself or your dog...mix one 16 oz. bottle of hydrogen peroxide, one quarter cup of baking soda and two tablespoons of dish soap. This will dissolve the oil in the spray and kill the odor, you may have to do this twice if you took a large dose of the spray.
Skunks can not spray once they have all four feet off the ground. They can't raise the tail. Saw that when I was just a little kid. Before I had the above recipe also.

A skunk (when cornered) will point his rear at you- then the tail goes up (all except the very tip) this is the final warning- he will keep his rear pointed at you and the tail tends to twitch- if you back off he won't spray- but take a step closer and the tip of the tail will also point up- effectivly sparaying you with the Strawberry vomit mix!!!! Nothing like it!

My springer has a skunk "friend" and gets sprayed several times a year. It's smell is so bad that when I bath the dog I loose my sence of smell for a short time. Imagine a dead kangaroo rotting and adding manure and decaying fish; maybe one rotten egg and that would be it LOL.

Hey JEFFD, is your dog a platnum blonde now? Recently a car in front of me hit a skunk. The spray stays in the air so much that, after driving over the poor dead animal my car carried the smell for days. I had to park waaaaay out in the parking lot at work for about a week.

My retriever was several shades lighter for awhile.
He looked kind of goofy while the new hair was growing out.
But he didn't smell bad.

I don't think I complain too much about the roos beside the road anymore. You have all convinced me, especially Stefan and Spirit Stone. However, Aussies still have vegemite.....BLLLLAARRGGGGHHHHH!
