At least they apologized and told you to have a good day. I don't suppose geology is something they have to study for law enforcement and in their trade, most crystals would be suspect. It's too bad they had to break your crystal to test it though.

I would have asked him, "whos gonna pay for this EXPENSIVE" piece, that you two bone heads broke" All you had to do was tell them it's a mineral specimen instead of saying it's "new type of man made crystal" What color is it? Alot of bismuth is redish in color and has a metallic look to it. I think I'll go put a bag of borax or aluminum oxide in the dask of my car and see what happens..

Sounds like my son's teacher that thinks black tourmaline is "black crystal meth." If that's not enough a couple days ago my landlords daughter told her dad I was over here "making rocks" after she saw my rock tumbler. He got upset thinking I was showing her a weird round vibrating rubber mixer for meth ingredients. I told him to go ahead and call the cops to have it tested because they like a good laugh as much as anybody else. After I took a rock out, washed it off and showed it to him to prove that it was just a rock he finally calmed down. Grandmaw still thinks I'm up to something and that he needs to watch me more closely so I don't sell her granddaughter any drugs. Personally I avoid the little princess at all costs because that child is a pain but that's another story altogether.
Let's face it. Most people don't understand an interest in rocks and would rather think the worst than believe a normal sane person could innocently enjoy something as simple and natural as rocks and minerals. Diamond rings at the jewelry store they understand. Someone tumbling rocks and making jewelry at home they can't believe in anymore than they believe in the Easter Bunny.

From a distance these stories have a humorous side. But also it shows a tremendous level of ignorance towards rocks/minerals and drugs.

I'm gonna drive 85 in a 45 zone, have a bag of borax on the dash and have some powdered sugar donuts in the seat next to me so I can grab it and wipe it all over my nose before the cop gets to my window. Then when he asks me to roll down my window I'm just gonna ask, "what" and look all freaked out. The cops in our town are pretty messed up. I'd love to get a lawsuite going. A funny story, Takila and I were going to Milwaukee one evening, sitting at a red light where there are two lanes going straight. Right after you get through the light the right lane ends so we were in the left lane. A car pulls up in the right and I told Takila "watch this" Everyone trys to race to the ending lane and cut over fast before the right lane ends. Well the light turned green and I took off like a bat outta hell, racing this car next to me. Man we were flying! It was our local Starsky and Hutch, the undercover cops. They got in behing me and pulled me over in the school parking lot. Both cops got out one walks up to Takila's side real quiet while the other comes up giving me crap. He asks why I raced him. I told him that he raced me to beat me to the end of his lane. This moron tells me he was on a call. I asked why he didn't have his lights on then. And if he was on a call WTF are you doing pulling me over instead. Starsky was hoping it was a couple young kids that he could hassle. When he saw it was two middle aged adults drinking coffee he tried giving me crap and then told me to drive safe. I hate cops that think they are above the law.

LOL. You mean there are cops that don't think they are above the law? I don't think I believe in those either. The Easter Bunny maybe but not those. This area is really bad about that. A few months ago the cops hassled a tearoom run by some wiccans till they gave up and went out of business. They kept arresting the patrons for tresspassing till they accidently arrested the DA's nephew and a highway patrolman's son. They claimed the tea establishment was dangerous. How could that be anymore dangerous than the ice cream parlor across the street and the restaurant next door? I know the real reason they drove them out of town but nobody can prove it. Mind you while this was going on there was a crime spree of people stealing off-road vehicles and 2 murders that were both unsolved in the same county but I guess harrassing the ladies that ran the tearoom was less dangerous that working on those cases.
People here sure are backwards! It's almost reassuring to know this isn't the only place like that.

You think that's bad, well imagine what it's like to be a geocacher... Try explaining to the cops on more than one occasion what you're really doing when they stop you and say there's been reports of "suspicious individuals/activities" and you just happen to be rooting around in the bushes and looking to see if anyone is watching you... Yeah officer, i'm just looking for some tupperware that someone hid in these bushes somewhere, nothing illegal going on here... ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) I now have to carry an informational flyer with me when I go out that explains exactly what geocaching is and gives references to the organizations and websites devoted to it to help get me out of those potentially very messy situations when they occur now. It's frigging ridiculous that such a state of sensless fear has been stricken into so many people these days that most can no longer even fathom the notion of other people simply excersising their RIGHT to enjoy public spaces in an ENTRIRELY LEGAL way. Oh-no, someone just HAS to be up to no good if they aren't either quickly passing by or just stopped to let their dog crap all over the place. ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) I once spent well over half an hour talking some dumb bag down off her high horse when she had the nerve to try kicking me and my friend out of a PUBLIC PARK, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY ON A WEEKEND, IN MY OWN HOME TOWN!!! I had to restrain myself verbally after she threatened to sic her DOG on us while she called the cops!!! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Eventually, her husband came out to talk to us and at least he was reasonable enough to hear us out. We made sure to let them know how insulted and disgusted we were with the way we were treated. Typically enough, the cops never showed so we just left after we were done and will never go back to that f'in place. Ignorance and narrow mindedness are running rampant these days. It's probably a more wide spread problem than drugs or weapons in schools, street gangs, home invasions, car-jackings, gang violence and whatever other paranoid dellusions the media can cook up for the evening news. It's all part of a very disturbing epidemic that is plaguing our modern society, likely more-so in the US than here but it's all still due to the same BS media fanaticism blowing every damn thing that happens so far out of proportion with reality, just to make you watch the news that it's no wonder people are so on edge all the time. They buy it all hook, line & sinker thinking they need to be ever vigillant of all the evil-doers that are lurking everywhere. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) What a truly sad age for humanity when wholesome human interests are first assumed to be part of some sinister activity and not "normal". I wonder what wholesome activities all these wanna-be heroes are doing with their free time when they're not sitting at home all night watching COPS & America's Most Wanted....? ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) Alright alright, I think i've ranted long enough... FOR NOW! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

After spending a week in Mexico it is really striking just how much of a police state this so-called "land of the free" has become.
Drive around with your buds in the back of a pickup? not a problem most places, but illegal in the "land of the free"
Camp out by the side of a rural road so you can watch a car race come by in the morning? fine in Mexico and a lot of other countries, not in the "land of the free"
Wear your shoes through airport security? no problem in Mexico, but serious trouble if you try in the "land of the free"
Sure there are probably a few freedoms we have that others don't but I think that list is growing shorter than it has ever been before, while I think a lot of other countries are relaxing restrictions on personal freedom.
I used to wonder how people in the old Soviet union and places we used to hear of would put up with all the oppression and restrictions placed upon them, but I'm beginning to understand that lacking perspective of alternate systems, it is easy to buy in to a lifestyle that lacks freedom and not even realize it.
