I am sooooooooo unhappy!!! My computer puked today. I think it's the power supply but am not sure. I've been getting error messages the past two days saying it was unable to write to disk so I knew it was having problems. I installed my plextor (cd r/w) planning to get my info saved to disk but when I turned the puter back on, it wouldn't come back on. It's just dead. I hooked up an antique pentium 2 and am thinking of switching harddrives to see if I can get my info off the other one. This so sucks! Anyway, if you don't see me around, you'll know why. I called my assistant admin on my forum to let her know to take over and she looked up my dial-up number so I am able to hook up. Man I hated dial-up anyway but going backwards really sucks bad.

Cher - If worst comes to worst you can use your saw and cut the offending puter into tumble size pieces. That way all is not lost.

that SO sucks. at least you HAVE dial up! better n' nuttin', honey....
wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to get a new power supply and install that, than swapping out hard drives to antique Pentium?
dang computers pop like light bulbs these days...how old was it? don't know what kind of pieces and parts you need to move when installing that r/w cd drive, but maybe you knocked a wire loose? dust up the capacitor...you know, something like that. fans are working? can you get it to boot at all?
technology sucketh. especially when you start to depend on itth.
ler me know if i can help, KD

You can never fully appreciate how dependant on your computer you are until it dies, THEN you realize you're F'ed without it! Cher, it's not uncommon for a computer power supply to fail when it's been powered on for a long time without incident and then it gets turned off for a while for routine maintenance. It is one of those surprise problems that pop up for computer techs every now & then. You shut it down & haul it to the shop with some buggy problem or wanting an upgrade and then they tell you your power supply is shot on top of that. I know exactly what goes wrong and why and I know exactly how to fix it so it never happens again but it is now cheaper to buy a new one than repair the problem. Of course, the same problem always exists and it's only a matter of time. It is assumed that your computer will be obsolete by that time anyway so manufacturers really have no reason or incentive to make them better, only CHEAPER.

The main thing is the hard drive, it's got all my pics and web pages, including client sites on it. I've got to get that somehow. The hard drive on this computer is very small, only 5.35 Gig so I need a bigger one anyway. The drive in the puked computer is 45 Gig but I'm worried about the problem with writing to the disk which was why I wanted to get my stuff off of it to start with. I've always had nothing but dial up, but I the other puter has a lot more ram, this one only has 64 meg. Lcars, I ver seldom leave my computer running, it's used to being shut off. That's why I was so surprised when it wouldn't start back up. ;D My computers couldn't get anymore obsolete. The newest one was 1999 pentium 2, which I tore down to put parts into a pentium 3 that was a year older. Ok, maybe not too wise but I was thinking faster?? Anyway, now I'm using the grands which is either 98 or 99, I haven't looked inside to see when it was made. cher if ya think or someone tells ya it is probably the power supply....we have a couple on hand...be more than happy to send you 1 to try...maybe a couple of extra harddrives...the harddrives havent been checked yet....but if cp says the hard drives check ok...ill send you 1 of both if it helps...kev. Kev, that is so cool of you to offer, thank you. Is there anything I need to check on mine to see if it will work or are they all pretty universal? I've never messed with a power supply yet, everything else but. *sigh* This thing just has me plain worn out.
