I think LCARS is the resident mushroom picker. I don't know if they have Morrell's up in BC or not (that's where he lives). We used to look for them when I lived in Wisconsin but I never found any...just puffballs.

You are missing out, Gaetz, if you like mushrooms. At least somebody knew what they were, lol! A guy I work with went out and brought home 75, yes, 75 on Sunday. In Nebraska!!! I guess he picked my spot, that's why we only found 3. The dirty rat dastard! But I know where he keeps his freezer.... BTW, you can eat puffballs, of certain types, if you pick them early enough. Haven't done that, probably won't, but it is fun trying to ID mushrooms. Get a book, take some spore patterns, the kids will love it. And here comes the hail.... the tornado alarm an hour ago was a bust, but the hail is really, really here!

I hate mushrooms, unless they are magic. Around here, at least once a year we read about somebody who is on life support because they ate some mushrooms they found that looked just like the ones they ate back in their country.

Ed, I'm pretty freaked out by wild mushrooms too, but I don't have any problem with morels. They have such a unique appearance that they are difficult to mistake for anything else. And darned tasty too! -Don

I'm with Ed. Lots of wild mushrooms at the ranch and I know some of the ones that are OK to eat but don't care for shrooms at all. College I went to in the Bay Area had someone poisoned almost every year. Taste like worm dirt to me anyway. Yuck! *L* Those morels ( sp. ?) are pretty to photograph though. Very interesting form....mel

The fanciest shrooms I've ever had were portabellas. (for those that don't know...they're not fancy at all ![:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cheesy.png) But I gotta tell ya something... Last week, me & Mojo were running and I stopped to look at a turn of the century shed on college property. They have different plants labeled & lots of info on the property & I love to stop & read it. Well....low & behold...I look down & there were TONS of those shrooms just like your picture! Oregon & Washington, I've heard, have some real nice wild ones that can command BIG bucks. So I had a papertowel on me (for those unexpected emergencies...wink, wink!) & I plucked one from the ground so I could look it up when I got home. These suckers were HUGE! Some, almost as big as my closed fist. Well...according to what I could find...they WERE Morels. BUT...info said there are some that look very similar but are very bad. They also talked about the critters that can crawl out of them & how contact with too much water would make them ucky too. All I read was "critters". Nuff said. They can become compost for all I care... Yuck.

More info on Morrells here, among many other sites: www.mosportsmen.com/mushroom/walk.htmThere is a 'false morrell', which is poisonous, so if you want to eat them, be very sure. If I have any doubt at all, I don't eat them. However, once you see a false morrell, it really isn't hard to tell the difference. Now let me tell you what some really crazy folks do with corn smut! www.gourmetsleuth.com/huitlacoche.htmEver seen corn smut? It sells for more per pound than a bushel of corn.

I hunt them !! and it's ok with me if you don't want any !! ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) ;D ;D-- ( that just leaves more for me : ![:))](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cheesy.png) -- the crazy weather we've been having , don't know if there will be many this year --- did find one yesterday and it was almost dried up --- our season usually starts about the 10th of april but we were having below freezing temps at night --- first are the small greys -- then a week or so later the yellows and greys will both be out then the big yellows will end the season the first week of may --- soak in milk then dipped in egg and rolled in cracker crumbs and fried in real butter --- complete meal !! -- anyone want to stop by ? oh, and my favorite spot is right over there a little ways !! ;D ;D

Ooooh, I think I just made a new best friend here ;D You got yourself some nice morchella esculentas there Karen! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I picked a few morels here myself over the weekend but all we get here are forest naturals which are a bit tricky to find in season and they have a relatively weak flavor compared to the preemo black fire morels I picked in the Okanagan in '97. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I made almost $600 in three days pickin bucket after bucket of those babies & still could affard to dry a couple pounds to bring back with me to the island. Oh how I long for the days of prime fire morel pickin, you see not many large fires occur on the island and when one does it is usually on one of the more remote gulf islands which makes timing crucial and limits your ability to scout the site ahead of pickin season. Here are a couple pics I took of this and last year's first picks... ![](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/LCARS/Mushrooms/1st2k7Morel.jpg) ![](http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/LCARS/Mushrooms/06-04-07-morels-1.jpg)

you can eat those? I always leave the strange looking ones alone, and just pick the spongy undersided ones. Thought they were poisonous.

LCARS, those are awesome photos. Great composition, especially that last one. They do, however, look like they are straight off the set of Satr Trek or Dr. Who!
The only mushrooms I find and eat are in teh produce section of the supermarket. There are too many out in the bush that will send you to an early grave.

You all are too funny. You'll go to hell and back for a great rock, risking life and limb; you'll lick rocks with who knows what on them; but you won't eat one little mushroom that looks kinda strange! What a hoot! And they are the 'creme de la creme' of mushrooms. Hmm, I'm trying to think of a good analogy...

Sands, --- if I was fixing some of these you could just throw that T-bone to the dog as it would be taking second place to the " rooons" ;D ;D --- maybe I'll go see if I can find some today !! ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

Hey snowdog, those look great, I love those things. Have you ever tried fried squash blossoms? They are great too, I usually use Zucchini. Terry
