???Hi Everyone. Boy did I have a bad night! I Know this is off the beaten path but I gotta talk about it. I am a type 1 diabetic and if you don't know what that is, I take insulin. Last night I got up in the middle of the night and took a insulin shot for some stupid reason and went back to bed. Next thing I know it is 7:30 A.M. and i'm in my chair sweating and cold with my wife feeding me cereal as fast as she can shovel it down. My sugar dropped to god knows what and that was that. Good thing I didn,t winde up in the hospital! Anybody in the same boat with me and what have you done to prevent this if you do take insulin? I know one stupid thing I did, I didn't eat very well. Shame on me. My poor wife was frantic but fortunately she know's what to do. Anyway, all better now, just wanted to share. Ed M.

I have a friend who is 57 and is a type 1 diabetic. She has now gone to using an insulin pump instead of shots. She watched her diet and her blood sugar closer than anyone I've ever met, but as you get older, it getting harder to keep things on an even keel. She has been tickled pink since she got the pump. bd ps. I used to give her singing lessons. I tried as much as I could to improve her self-esteem. Problem was, her and my wife couldn't get along.

Hey bd, thank's for the reply. I have tried the insuling pump but kept getting infections at the needle site and had to go back to the shots. I just turned 50 this year and yes it does get harder to control. Hope a cure is on the way but probably not in my lifetime. Ed M.

Hey Ed, sorry to hear that. I understand that infections do kind of come with the territory. Unfortunately, diabetes is one of those medical conditions where too many people make too much money from your problem. I have to believe that that is the main reason why progress has been so incredibly slow in that area. I feel for ya Ed, but keep active, keep positive, and don't let it get you down!

Be careful Ed, my neighbors grandaughter recently passed away from complications from diabetes, unfortunatly she didn't watch what she ate and didn't take her shots or check her blood enough.she just wouldn't listen. she was found dead and they had to do an autopsy and the girl was about 36 yrs old and she had the organs of an 80 yr old lady the diabetes had aged her so fast. it was very sad situation

Just another 'be careful', dude. Please, please, take care of your feet. I'm sure you know why. The unexpected does happen. If you want the sad story, I'll pass it on. If not, please accept my well wishes, and just take care of yourself!

I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better, do you have any idea at all why you took that shot in the middle of the night? Were you sleepwalking or something? That's really scary, lucky for you your wife knew what to do. No more night time walks now!!!

Hi Ed,
I too am a type 1 diabetic. It really sucks sometimes. I also have problems with low blood sugar at times. The best candy for it (I have found) is gummi bears or skittles -- nothing but sugar! It works a lot better than hard candy. Regular soda is also a good one. Don't do chocolate. It takes to long to work (I had a seizure once because the candy bars wouldn't work fast enough. Then later on your blood sugar skyrockets!
I also get extremely tired after a bout of insulin shock. Insulin shock is blood sugar of 60 or below. The doctor says it's because it is a trama to you system. I am 45 and was diagnosed on my 32nd birthday. Your A1c number is the most important.
