Earthdog and I would like to check it out on our trip in a week. I found some websites about it but if anyone has any good ideas about where to go or what to see, I'd appreciate your comments! Thanks!

I drove down there and rode on train because I like trains. It includes a bit of Amish info. www.offroaders.com/Destinations/Lancaster/Strasburg-Railroad.htmThe rest of the area is somewhat touristy and you get the roadside-gift-shop view of Amish life from non-Amish vendors. Not very satisfying. If you can find a few shops that are Amish run and selling their own furniture or quilts, that might be worth visiting. One large gift ship and cafe also had a tape playing inthe lobby that ran for 45 minutes and explained about the Amish. It was good, but you do not have to go to Lancaster to see a tape that can likely be rented or seen on some TV channel. Maybe do the train, look for a factory-store for Amish furniture, and treat anything else as hit-or-miss.

There's a lot of Amish in NE Iowa where my daughter lives. Every where you go you'll see hitching posts for their buggies. We took a ride out of town into the farming areas and found that a lot of them had little shops right on their farms where they sold quilts, canned goods, jellies etc. Anyway, I know you're not going to Iowa but I'm sure that it will be similar in how they live. Take a few rides out in the country, you might find some interesting places that way.

but they have the best food...vegetables...pies...cakes....anything you can think of....its all grown in their fields....and used in the restaurants they have....and those restaurants are always full.

Takila and Edog,
I used to live in York County, right next door to Lancaster. As Daniel mentioned, alot of what you find in that area tends to be more commercial stores with a few Amish working for them. Your best bet is to do some searches for Amish quilts, etc., and see what others have found in the area. Of course, you have to go a little further to Intercourse and Bird in Hand. There are some touristy shops, but also Amish crafts, quilts, etc. Antiques, too. Quilts are nice, but they can be pricey. And don't be embarrassed about snapping pix of yourselfs next to the sign that reads "Entering Intercourse"...everyone does it. Google Intercourse, Bird in Hand and the Strasburg Railroad for ideas. It is beautiful country -- That's where rolling hills were invented. Get some shoofly pie and go easy on the horse and buggies. They always have the right of way.
I hope to be back that way myself soon. Enjoy and share some pix.
