For mothers day I got a very large hurricane vase with dirt & moss inside - the packaging says that there were "Zantedeschia picasso" or Picasso cally lilly bulbs inside that were dormant and would grow with a little water & sunlight - well they started sprouting inside and as we were putting up ceiling fans one weekend we noticed little flies. As I went to water the pot, there were lots of these little flies in and around the vase. I don't know if they were dormant in there, or were somewhere else and were attracted to this plant but the plant had to go outside and fast! I have NO green thumb whatsoever so I'm not sure what to do with this plant. It's been outside on the front porch that faces full south for about about 2 weeks or so now and has one flower that bloomed - but does it just need water and sunlight? Once it dies, is this like tulips and cut the stalk so the bulb can go dormant? Do I bring it inside for the winter. ALL help would be appreciated as I know nothing about this beautiful bloom except that it's white & purple (my favorite color) Here's what it looks like www.langeveld.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=plants.plantDetail&plant_ID=257

Don't know much about how to care for them Tweetie.. but I've had other types of Lillies and never did anything but water them and they did fine. If I remember right they will die back in the winter and the bulbs stay dormant... you probably don't have to cover them unless you get cold enough for the ground to freeze.
The one you have sure is a nice variety ... I like the color. Good luck! Dan

I would plop it in the ground too. Get it away from any plants you may have inside so the flies don't find a new home. (if they're not gone already!)
My Mom divided many of these in her lifetime & brought them to each home we've ever had. Never saw her do much of anything to them & they've always bloomed year after year.

I dunno folks...plopping lilies in the ground in canada could be iffy. Tweet, my mom has one that she just put into potting soil and out of direct sunlight. It's doing okay...but then, I swear, she could could grow hair on a slug.

I think if you followed the same care instructions for tulips in your area you should be fine. Cut the stalk after it's really, really dead, dig the bulbs up in the fall after they've absorbed nutrients and before the ground goes as hard as a rock, replant once threat of freeze has passed.

My mom in Sask keeps hers indoors all year and it blooms every easter or there abouts. That's one nice lily you've got there...i've not seen them with the purple.

according to that link, Tweet, they are good to zone 8-9, definetly not a nsurvival candidate for Canadian winters. i'd wait til fall, clip off the dead tops, dig up the bulbs and put them in a paper grocery sack and store them in a cool, dark and dry place (like your basement?) where they won't freeze. put them back in the ground as soon as the ground thaws in the spring.
