My wifes grandfather (89 years old) took a fall and broke a hip- he went in for surgery and they replaced it. All is well and he has very positive prospects for recovery- But we need your prayers because he is REFUSING to go into a therapy center (at least 16 weeks is what they are saying) He just asked to be sent home instead (thankfully his doctor is refusing to let him do this). fisty old fart anyway!!!

16 weeks is a long time to let him know about from the begining. Tell him he will stay two or three weeks, then...
I wish him a good recovery and you a lot of power and patienty.

Hello Stefan,
WHO said your wife's grandfather would be in the therapy center for 16 weeks??? Medicare has very strict guidelines and 16 weeks are about 12 to 14 weeks beyond the typical stay. Someone is speaking without knowing what they are talking about. I have just retired as a Geriatric Specialist Physical Therapist and my husband is still working as a Geriatric Specialist Occupational Therapist. The average hip replacement patient is in and out of the skilled nursing home/rehab center in two to three weeks. (And if he is an HMO patient, his stay will be even shorter.) Maybe the person encouraging the grandfather to go to a facility meant to say 16 days. Even at the height of the Medicare abuse days, 16 weeks of therapy for a hip repair patient was unheard of. Someone is pulling someone's leg and your grandfather-in-law is right on target to question that length of stay.
Unless he has multiple, severe medical complications he should be well recovered in 3 months and fully recovered in 6. But there is no way that Medicare will cover his stay for 16 weeks--even in New York where there is a specialized insurance plan for Medicare eligible patients. After 2-3 weeks in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) he will likely be returning home with Home Health Therapy for a few more weeks if needed.
All of you are in my prayers but please, get someone who is knowledgeable to clear up the length of stay issue right away.

BTW...89 is not so old any more when it comes to successful recovery from these surgeries. We are actually seeing patients in the late 90s, early 100s making full comebacks after hip replacements. My oldest successful patient was 104!
Good to hear that the grandfather is still a 'fiesty old fart"! :-)

I don't mean to step on any body's toes here, or get anything started, but I agree with LadyB. Medicare would never pay for all of that. Usually, that kind of stay involves Medicaid, and before they will pay, they take pretty much everything. If you transferred out property, you better have done it at least 3 years earlier.

Good wishes and a speedy recovery for Grandpa! Even though I know nothing about it, 16 weeks seems long to me, too. And Lady B is basically an expert on the subject, so I'd get a 2nd opinion as they say! I hope I'm just as fiesty when I'm 89 if Earthdog doesn't "kill" me before that..........lol!

Sorry about the confusion- 16 weeks is the TOTAL recovery time (Rehab center and Home therapy combined). The doctor gave such a long timeframe as Grandpa has had to bouts with liver cancer and his immune system ain't what it used to be. But All is going well- and they had him out of the wheelchair yesterday! Thanks all for your prayers and concerns!

Hey Gramps, get well soon. You didn't get to be 89 by not being a feisty little bugger. You'll get through this young man.

Thanks for clarifying, Stefan. Even though I am "retired" from the profession I still get bent out of shape when patients are given the wrong information. Sounds like Grandfather is right on track now. And with all the added prayers from your RTH extended family he'll be kickin' butt in no time.
