A friend of mine at work recently had a pool installed and wanted a deck added to it. I do decks and landscaping on the side from my normal factory job for extra spending money and he asked me if I would build one for him. When I took the job, I didn't really know it would turn out to be as big as it ended up - it took me about 3-1/2 weeks of mornings and a couple of Saturdays to complete. He had already purchased most of the materials, so I had to design and build it from the pile without having to add much more to it - this was a challenge in itself, but we finally agreed on a size. The main deck measures 18x28 and is 54" off of the ground, while the lower connecting deck to the existing house deck is 9x12. It is not the biggest one I have ever built, but the most time consuming. My friend was very particular and tended to watch every little thing which made it hard to work the way I normally do. But in the end, I am very happy with the results. Take a look... The main pool deck.... The lower connecting deck and the back.... Thanks for looking!

You did a beautiful job. I so admire all of you who can knock out a project like that! (And you're still friends? Way to go!)

Thanks everyone! I've been doing them for about 18 years. It really is satisfying to be able to take a pile of materials and turn it into something usable like a deck. No one deck is ever the same design, and they all have their own challenges. I have to admit that it is getting harder to do myself as I get a little older - I have a couple of nephews that are about the right age to start helping me out and I might put them to work on the next ones.
