Looks like I won't be moving to Virginia. BTW, why have a picture of an ILLINOIS state policeman in an article about Virginia? I agree there are some drivers who deserve to get a fine like that, but most of the time not. The last ticket I got, several years ago, was this: I was in a part of town I never have been in before and I was looking for an address. I came to an intersection, going fairly slow with all side streets, and I did check for traffic but none in sight in either direction but failed to see the stop sign while trying to find the street signs. I got caught for not completely stopping at a stop sign and paid fine of $75. I made a mistake and paid the penalty, OK. But, $3000!!?? That's absurd.

That is totally outrageous! Another example of big brother regulating behavior.
And it is so fair: Driving without a license is not as serious as speeding?
Reading further, the new penalties do not apply to out of state drivers; how long will that last?
I am firmly in favor of penalizing bad behavior. Charge someone $10,000 if they cause an accident, but speeding is accepted behavior. If it was stricly enforced it could be stopped instantly. States, cities and all US Governments make money off alcohol and encourage drinking, and then they want to penalize DUI; that is simply hypocritical and just not right.

Very good points, chassroc! If they want to be able to afford fixing their highways, then maybe the State needs to budget their tax income better! What happens if everyone actually complies with all the traffic laws and no one gets a ticket...............then where are they going to get the money to fix their roads?
