Touchy subject......I posted more to discuss "it only happens in America" vs the pro's and con's of capital punishment. Unfortunately, our legal system has many flaws. It allows for death row inmates to appeal multiple times, and the taxpayer still has to pay for this person up to their execution years later. On the flip side, in States, such as the one I live in, that does not have capital punishment, we, the taxpayers, still have to take care of ALL criminals until their release date or their death, whichever comes first. There is no right answer as far as I'm concerned. But if we, the people, pass capital punishment laws, then it should be done humanely as possible, even though I know most of them do NOT deserve it. I personally don't want to stoop to their level, but I know I'm not always strong enough. Now, for example, take the Amish people that had to deal with the shootings of their school children by a whacko! They actually went to the funeral of the man that killed their children! That amazed me! I know I couldn't do it if I was the parent of a slain child! They are practicing what they preach.
Anyway, I was more baffled as to why the Dept. of Corrections didn't stop the process immediately and try it a different day or a different way. And that I couldn't believe that the mother was suing for it. How does her winning money change how executions are performed! Again, only in America do things get that messed up and then it shows how sue happy people are!

The question was asked..."Since when do prisoners deserve rights?"
The answer is...Uhhh, when the prisoner is covering up for the VP and maybe the Pres about Outing a CIA agent.
And the moral of the story is , Let's be tough on crime and criminals. Juvenile, Schmuvenile. Let's overrule these Liberal judges who are ruining the country by instituing Mandatory sentencing. Let's give em ten years for shoplifting a box of cookies from Walmart. UHHHHH, except if the crime is committed by one of my buddies, who didn't stick to the script we gave him.

Hey, let's face it, historically there has been nothing "humane" about the human race. Whether it be in our living, or in our dying, "humane" is a title that none of us have the right to wear.

86 minutes is definately too long. They should have sawed his head off with a dull rusty knife.

Hey, the terrorist's in Iraq thought it was ok to behead an American with a dull knife on video and post it on the internet..I'm sure most of you thought that was "INHUMANE". So if we execute someone in the same style in the name of justice, it's ok? Yeah, yeah, I know, it was only needle pricks, but what do you think was going through his head? 86 minutes would be torture to any of us. Putting the reason aside for why he was getting executed; we make sure we put pets/animals down "humanely", shouldn't we also do that to a human being? If a pit bull attacks and kills a child, do the authorities normally "execute" him for this crime?.........Does animal control take the dog into a room and torture him for an hour and a half first before putting him down? What it comes down to is that they need to come up with back-up plan, taking 86 minutes to execute someone makes them look incompetent!

I don't think the Prison Officials intended to torture Mr. CLark for 86 minutes. From the reports released about his execution it would appear that several IV lines failed to carry the lethal dosage into his vital organs because the veins kept collapsing, some only after the chemicals were already being released into the IV. Few execution cells have a surgeon or an IV RN on hand specially trained in doing a cut down in which an incision is made in order to expose deeper veins which tend to be stronger than the superficial ones used for standard blood withdrawals and IV therapies. It is unclear from the official information released as to where the final line was placed. If there were no viable veins the remaining choice would have been to place a line in either the carotid artery at the neck or the femoral artery in the groin area of the thigh. Before going for an artery the phlebotomist would have tried both arms (with at least 3 possible locations on each), wrists, hands, web spaces between the fingers, and both feet. This would help to explain the 19 needle sticks performed in order to carry out the execution.
Here in Florida, when a pit bull attacks and kills a human, police are authorized to shoot the animal if they feel that the animal could endanger another life. Otherwise the animal will either be given a lethal injection or will be gassed, depending on the county facilities to which the animal is taken.
As for taking 86 minutes and/or a back up plan--because of the difficulties encountered with this execution and two here in Florida, most states that have a death penalty with lethal injection as a choice now do have a better trained staff present and an alternate plan. In a sense, Mr. Clark paid his debt to society and served some good to his fellow condemned prisoners.

I,m sorry but I believe he got what was coming to him. Our goverment spends way too much on the prisoners on death row, money that could be used elsewhere.

Eeeek! I hope people don't take that literally... Oh they'll take it literally alright. Further, just because a person expresses legitimate concerns about the way the country is being run and the laws being enacted, most likely, somebody on this board will get 'offended" and then quit the board which rallies the troops, even those supposedly your "friends", to insinuate that you're a bigot and responsible for others leaving the board. It makes them "mad" so they strike out at you personally, blackball you and send rabid PMs to their immediate clan. Course, since they're mad and don't agree with you, the next thing is to throw a piss fit on the board and by the time the smoke clears, hard feelings have meta morphed into childish actions, statements and behaviors like purposefully ignoring the "enemy" in unrelated posts all in an effort to ostracize the perceived bigot/racist/whatever label you want to tag on them. It's wrong. It's childish. And has and will continue to do irreparable damage to RTH board relationships and even off board relationships that have developed. When poster 1 says "Blah, blah, blah I don't like how such and such is going and I don't like it one bit" and poster 2 says "I am going to leave this board because nobody is calling poster 1 on "bigotry" and blah, blah, la-de-da" and poster 3 then chimes in with "Now I'm pissed off because poster 1 has run off poster 2 and yak, yak, yak, yak yak....." Screw that crap. If you're going to have a forum like this, you have to be prepared to listen to opposing views. I didn't get one bit mad until it was obvious that poster 2 had decided to pull a passive aggressive tactic of manifesto and then the board biddies chimed in with their labeling and passive aggressive BS. That incident ruined this board for me in all reality. Anybody that tries to squelch one side of the argument is small minded and lacks a backbone to be honest. To label me a bigot, the legitimate feelings I voiced as bigoted, was damn near libelous and to see the shark attack that followed was sickening. I left when I could see that the feeding frenzy had turned on me, but came back thinking the feelings could be kept separate from the rest of the board. I know now after receiving a couple of PMs that were written that it simply isn't true. A forum like this would be fine at RTH if people with egos the size of a planet weren't participating. WHEN YOU SQUELCH OPINION, GET MAD AND QUIT THE BOARD LEAVING A CRAP STORM BEHIND YOU AND ALLOW LEGITIMATE RESPONSES ON LEGITIMATE CURRENT EVENTS TO COLOR HOW YOU TREAT ANOTHER POSTER IN OTHER AREAS OF THE BOARD YOU ARE AN EMOTIONAL CHILD. Tulip THAT!

things have changed a lot about the way folks think huh...from the old days....but when indcrz47...said tax collectors....made me think about a paragraph from grandads book. ;D
quote.
The revenue officers used to come to our house and leave their horses and say they were going over in the Dark Corner to cut a still. They would be gone all day. I remember one of the officer's name was Guss Aikens of Asheville, NC. All the stills then were copper. The officers would cut holes in the still with a little pick they called a devil. The people did not like the revenue officers. One time the officer and the men at a still got in a shooting scrape and one of the officers got killed. The other officer went to a man's house and asked him if he would take his wagon and take the dead man to Greenville. The man asked the officer how many were killed. They told him just one. He said, “No, I won't go for just one” - if there were a load he would go.
i know it doesnt have to do anything with the thread.....but the tax collector part reminded me somehow of revenuers ;D ;D ;D....kev

We just watched a National Geographic show about moonshining, it's history, the revenuers, the drivers and the cars they drove to move the moonshine and how Nascar came from this and that it still goes on to this day!! The reporters went undercover with the ATF to find the stills and arrest the moonshiners and now they use modified vans to move it. And, to this day, it's all about the government not getting their share of the money from the sales (taxes).........hmmm, sounds like our government has the same tactics as the Mafia! If you don't pay me, then I'm going to make your life hell! Watch out all of you that sell on Ebay or rummage sales and don't charge sales tax! They'll come and put "holes in your stills or blow it up with explosives"!

The guesstimate is that the Chinese nuke about 8000 people a year.
One of the latest being the guy that was in charge of their "food and drug" beaurocracy. For corruption, not that all the latest scandals didn't help - toothpaste, melamine, pet food, lead paint, etc. Hey, at least somebody in government, somewhere, was held accountable! Don't know their preferred method, guessing firing squad.
Nominations now being accepted for the short list - USA version. Early favorites: top dozen in FEMA two years ago same for Dept. of Homeland Security National Security Council - all of 'em Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Armitage, anyone else in DC who turns their head when you yell "Hey, neocon" all the yo-yos that ridiculed and shot down the generals pre-war manpower estimates did you start a war and send troops in without a vest for every soldier? did you lie to start a war? did you tell us it would only cost $50 billion? . . . . . and on and on.
Anybody that qualifies in more than one category - make it public - high noon on the Mall. Not that short a list anymore.
