Awhile back I posted a story about a fossil leatherback turtle shell that was found in my hometown, Summerville, S.C. While the turtle shell was being removed over a three day period, I took sequential photos of the excavation. These photos are now posted on flickr.com and anyone who would like to see the photos can go to: Be sure to click on each thumbnail so you can see the larger photo and read the captions. I hope you enjoy them! Vance

Neat photologue. It's amazing how what appears to be just a big mound of mud is actually something so precious. Makes one wonder how many times that turtle fossil was exposed and re-covered, exposed and re-covered, before it was finally recognized for what it is. Thanks for bringing us the update. Please keep us posted on further developments. Lady B

As it turned out, the turtle shell was cleaned up, starting from the underside of the shell, in only a week with two people working on. By keeping the soil (matrix) damp, it was easier to remove than expected. The leatherback expert from N.J. will be coming to the museum in late August to see the shell and possibly borrow it long enough to study it in detail. He will ultimately write a scientific paper on the turtle for publication. I will be going to the State Museum to see the shell when the expert comes down, and I will take photos of the cleaned specimen. I will post them here when I get them done.
