A vent; As some of you know we live 1/2 mile from the Coconino Natl. Forest. There is a small spot that we go to frequently to camp, have a nice fire and some beers or just to unwind at after work. Nothing spectacular, just a fire ring and a view of the Peaks, but it is off the beaten path. Today I went out to the camp to unwind after the work week with a cold sixer of Sam Adams only to find the place desecrated with garbage. It looked like a family of 12 was there for a week and left every piece of trash that they had there. This included 4 quarts of used motor oil. Beer cans, tuna cans, bean cans, styrofoam plates and tortilla chip bags just to start. Y'all remember the American Indian fellow with the tear in his eye in the commercials in the 70's? Now I know how the man felt. I have been maintaining the trees there, keeping them limbed up to prevent crown fires and keeping the pine needles away from the ring. I usually dispose of a little trash in the fire ring that didn't burn from the previous camper but today was another story. Looks like I'll have to recruit a few friends with rakes and trash bags this weekend. You don't have to be an "environmentalist" to be sickened by inconsiderate "people" that ruin our forests for everyone. Well, not the best way to start the weekend but this fired me up so much I had to vent a little.

I'll bet it was young punk ass kids. Most people over 30 would at least try to burn the trash.

leaving any thing on a bank...sand bar...campsite...or anything like that....is considered a death penalty around here....if we ever find out who did it.....they will be brought out...and dealt with accordingly....kev.

Perhaps you should make a sign ... "I left this area clean for you, kindly do the same"
I would never DREAM of leaving garbage in the wild. Most campers wouldn't, either. I agree that it sounds like you had a group of young assholes out there. Karma will catch-up with them.

See if any of the trash has an address on it, this way you'll know where to dump it.

I hear ya Mike, recently a person has been cutting up part of the Goldfield here soley to put a house. The road they made i am certain costed more than most homes they are biulding above. No respect, not to mention the trash they have up there, and catus they've killed. They rather riun the views of the people lower than them, for their own view. So it goes both ways. As i have a neigbor who trash blows onto my property all the time. What i pain i tell ya.

Perhaps you should make a sign .... I have thought about that but the forest service would just take it down since this is an un-official campsite and it is in our National Forest. Thanks for the responses, yep hopefully it will catch up to them via Karma or something. Man, I wish I could have caught them, I did survey the garbage but didn't see anything with an address on it Randy. It's probably better that I didn't. I like Kev's version of justice.

City kids is what we call em over on the Miss. River. They fish up close to the big dams and when they catch a non game fish, they throw it on the bank instead of returning it to the water. Getting rid of an 80 to 90 lb. pile of Carp that have been baking in the hot summer sun for a couple days is REALLY a fun job.

Baz My wife and I used to camp in the Ouachita Nat. Forest in Arkansas 6 or 8 times a year. We would take our 4 wheel drive Blazer out through the forest on the old logging roads. We found a hunters campsite that was not only a beautiful place, but the perfect campsite as well. We would go there and stay a week and never see another person the whole time we were there. We always took out more trash than we hauled in, but it really wasn't too bad. We usually took out a large garbage bag that someone else had left. The last time we were there, it looked like a garbage dump. Someone had trashed the place up so bad there was no way we could carry out all the garbage.
Shortly after that the Forest Service closed all the logging roads to motorized vehicles. Really ticked me off that I could no longer go out into the forest. I can't say that I blame them though. If people are going to turn the forest into a dump ground, I suppose they have the justification to close it off.
Now everyone is restricted to the main roads because of a bunch of pigs. Just makes me sick.

Now there is a crime that I could get behind some serious penalties for. Likely not capital punishment, but I would ocnsider it if it was large scale and calculated enough.
It is hard to know the right penalty. You would not want to take large monitary fines or property and possibly hurt kids inthe family, but you also would not want to incarcerate for 30 days at considerable tax-payer expense. maybe a choice between 200 hours spent cleaning parks, or some type of public tazering, followed by publically posting their names and pictures on an offender's list.

The girlscouts teach leave only footprints and take away only memories. I reinforce that with my girls; but if they see a really cool rock... lol

Yep, rocks are hard to leave as memories, especially the super-dooper pretty ones. I think we kinda get a pass on that one, unless it is a protected area.
Going for a 3 day camp Mon-Wed at a different, more popular but beautiful spot. I promise some pics.

Shame that someone messed it up, and I understand why you got p.o.'d. But rather than brooding about it, if you clean the place up you will probably come away from this with a positive attitude that you did something good, rather than leaving it as a negative experience.
If it happens a second time, plant a few land mines (joking!). ;D
