What are the odds of that? At least he died doing what he loved. I remember being up on a mountain peak on a cloudy rainy day with my kids and saying to them, "This is what it's all about. If I were to leave this Earth, this is the way I'd want to go." At that instant, an extremely loud thunder occurred, and it scarred me half to death. My kids were laughing, and laughing saying, "isn't this the way you'd want to go Dad?

A few days ago Florida (Fri or Sat) recorded 1800+ lightning strikes for just that one day. We are the lightning capital of the Western Hemisphere (GPS Tracking took away our claim to the Capital of the World and gave that title to an African nation--possibly Nigeria (?)). It is truly amazing how few humans do get hit here, especially considering that it does not need to be storming overhead for lightning to strike. And the folk lore saying about lightning not striking in the same place twice is just that: folk lore. I personally know of a house that was struck over seven diffrent times despite efforts to place rods and other deflectors. There are also many documented cases of people who have been struck more than once.
My husband and I were uncomfortably close to a strike a few years ago. Every hair on our body stood out straight and the "tingle" was incredible! On Saturday a man was struck by lightning at a nearby Sam's Club. Fortunately he survived.
Florida is the land of sunshine but when that sunshine turns liquid or starts to rumble, it is time to take cover. Unfortunately the diver in this thread's link surfaced at the absolute wrong time.

We just watched the news about the teen boy that was struck by lightening when he was mowing the lawn and wearing an IPod and how you could see the burn marks from where the earphones were! How freaky! And how freaky to be in the one spot in the whole ocean to get struck by lightening. I knew of someone that was riding their motorcycle in the Colorado Rockies and was struck and killed by lightening. They say your chances of getting hit by lightening are HIGHER than winning a lottery!
Last Fall, I was driving back to work from lunch in a thunderstorm. I don't know if it was lightening or not, but all of a sudden, one of thoses boxes at the top of a utility pole exploded right above me and all I could see was a big white flash and then sparks falling down. That freaked the s*** out of me! I ran right through the red light at the corner and luckily no one was coming the other way! Talk about your heart stopping! I thought I was done for for an instant!

Tony - I know you're experienced and all, but when you post Jade Cove pics I'm surprised that you're out there diving alone.

Rich, I don't have anyone to go with me.
KD, I have done that before but will think twice next time.

it does not need to be storming overhead for lightning to strike Tis it true. We had a guy get hit by lightning up here while he was in a tree (cutting it down). There wasn't a cloud in the sky where he was!! However, there was a storm in the distance, like 15-20 miles away.
