This is a morning dove that moved into one of the hanging plants outside our front door. We noted that she had some eggs in there and they have hatched.

That is soooooooo cool!! My son had one build in a hanging basket right next to his back door last year. Seems more and more the mourning doves are using these ready made nests. Good thing too because the ones they build aren't ... ummmm well I can't understand how the eggs stay in them. ;D

My mom always called those mourning doves, "big dum dums" because of their gawky movings around - they're not the brightest of birds - cool that they're nesting so close to you!
My dad build a bat house quite a few years ago when there were bats around his place when they first moved into the neighborhood. Sadly they never took to the bat house but it was a pretty cool idea to try to attract them - I like bats they're pretty cool! - and they eat tons of bugs - so they can't be bad!

We have a lot of mourning doves where we live, as well. We really enjoy them. In fact, we enjoy any wildlife that choose to hang out by us. The birds especially love our pond. Last year, we had a little bird (don't know what kind is was) nest up on the ledge behind a circuit breaker strip on our porch. We even saw one "living" there during the winter. I only thought they used nests to hatch their babies, I didn't know they live there, too. It was cute. Maybe the circuit breaker strip gave out a little bit of heat.

Yeah, we have the dopey poo birds as well. I'm in passionate hate with them during mulberry season. *grumble* I like them all other times!

Nice pic Rocky - did you use a zoom lens or were you able to get close up for the photo?
How are you going to get around the babies now they are at your front door without scaring the parents off?
tricky one.

This bird is pretty much tame. The photo was taken from about 1 foot away. This is a small flower basket and watering had me worried but my wife will pet her a little while she carefully waters the plant and the bird is ok with it. I talk to her some on my way to work in the morning, I ask how the babies are doing and wish her a good day. It's kind of comical now that I think of it, but it's great to experience a little connection with free nature.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about it is that the Mourning Dove has become a symbol of my wife's mother, Amy, who passed on a few years ago. It's a long story that I won't get into here but my wife and my oldest daughter each have a tattoo of a Mourning Dove in rememberance of Amy.
