This weekend at camp I gave Blood for the first time- What a great feeling it was- and the people at the American Red Cross were so cool- and the procedure was practically painless (the dang iron test thingy hurt worse than the actual needle!)- If you don't give Blood- but you can- give it a try- I got some yummy brownies and bottled water afterward- and a free t-shirt!

Good for you! I'm a longtime giver since my blood type is kind of rare. My daughter likes to come with me for the free cookies. It is a great feeling and yes, doesn't really hurt. I'm also considering marrow donation. Anyone ever done that?

Marrow donation, never heard of it but that has got to be painful. I had a roving organ donation crew show up at my door one day, they wanted my liver. I told them I was using it and to check back later.

Actually I don't think it is that painful. Then again, no sense no feeling!

I had to have a couple of blood tests done through my doctor. They took like 4 large viles of blood. I felt terrible for the rest of the day and next, weak and shaky and light-headed. I've always said, I couldn't handle them taking that much out, I would never make it giving blood! It's a great thing if you can, but I'm too afraid to try.

I know this sounds so stupid, but do they still pay people to give blood in the US
I loved giving blood - then the banned my mother & I from giving (I think I have so little blood going through my body, they take it all when they take their pint of blood - I pass out - tried it 3 times then they cut up my card (my mom's too!)

No tweet, they don't pay you. But you do get a tshirt and here they enter you in a raffle for baseball tickets. But no cash. I wonder if they ever really did pay people here? I know there are laws against paying people for body parts...I wonder if blood counts.
And thanks for the link ladyb.

When I was homeless I would sell my plasma 3 times a week. Got some honking scars to show for it but it helped keep me alive. ( You get the blood back they just keep the plasma.)

Some blood banks do pay for donors blood or plasma here in the US. Most try to keep the supply of blood up to the demands level thru donations, often with "gifts" like t-shirts , capped hats, and pins. American Red Cross will often work with corporations and large businesses and/or schools to encourage employees/staff & students to donate much needed blood. (Students must be 18 or older to donate blood here in Florida; not sure what the regs are in other states.)

I was told I can't donate anymore because of my cancer but I did get my two gallon pin a few years ago. You're right Stefan, the finger poke hurts more than the needle to draw the blood. I've wondered about donating bone marrow but I'm sure that follows under the same category as blood donating for me. For those that do, they are awesome people with really big hearts.

Yep, our friend who was homeless was donating his plasma too. 15 bucks or so a session.
Good for you Stefan, the Red Cross has a big week here in town once a year, think you've inspired me to participate.
