My employer had me take a training course a couple of weeks ago on the use of a special infrared camera. This camera was made to be sensitive only to infrared wavelength of 3.3 to 3.4 micrometers, which is an absorption band of the hydrogen-carbon bond in hydrocarbon molecules. What all of this means is that the camera makes hydrocarbon vapors visible. The main purpose of this camera is to detect leaks from pipe fittings, valves, pumps, etc. in chemical plants, oil refineries, pipelines, etc. Gasoline is an example of such material. Here is a video of a car being refueled. This video was used as an example from the camera in the course. Anybody for a cigarette? Click Here for the video (11.5 Mb) Remember this is an infrared image, not one of visible light. The light areas are warmer than the dark areas (or they are reflecting more infrared).

Eerie! Should give many people pause to think about what is all around them while they are pumping gas.
Some of the worst burned patients I treated when I worked as a therapist were burned because of gas vapors igniting. One case was of a little two year old boy who was fascinated by the neat red containers in the garage. He managed to get the cap off one and the pilot light from the hot water heater ignited the vapors all around him.
I think the camera is going to be/already is a wonderful tehnological break-thru lifesaver. Thanks for sharing.

Nothing to worry about. The fumes appeared heavier than air.

Wow - that's a very neat bit of kit - does it do other wavelengths too? Sure was strange the way the vapour dropped to the floor, but nasty the way it sort of billows up to the operator when the air moves. It really demonstates it's name of petroleum spirit hey?! Thanks for the link - that was really interesting. Glad I'm mainly a pedestrian!! Take care all - no - really take care!!
Cheers,
Harry.
