Now you guys know I love doing wildlife rescue and rehab work but ya know, sometimes it just kind irks me that the saved wildlife offers absolutely no respect or thanks to their rescuer. Today, I had to drop everything I was doing and go rescue a Great Horned Owl that had been hit by a car. My thanks was four talons in my arm and a buttload of hippoboscid flies crawling in my hair. Now the talons I really am pretty used to but I really hate those Owl Flies. Imagine a big, long, fast flying tick. I'm a biologist but you know, some things are just flat out too gross and ugly to exist. Major yuk!!! Anyway, so not the thanks I was hoping for. Hate to complain but just once I wish one of those birds would give me hugs instead of friggin bugs! *L*....Mel Here's a link to a picture of a hippoboscid fly for those of you who might be curious. I should add they are flat and hard like ticks too and even crawl sideways like crabs. Too gross! The pic is at hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek051108.html The type on Owls are much larger, about 1/2-3/4 inch.

Yup. Those hippos will do it to you every time. Whatever the heck they are. Maybe you can post a pic of one. I won't tell this to my DD. Wouldn't want her to change her major.

I refrain from perusing the posted pictures of the creatures as my neighbors are new and I'm sorely afraid they'll call the gestapo on the crazy female they see running amok in her yard, flailing arms akimbo AND as if the hubs of hell were on her heels.

Oh my God, Mel! I did not even know such a creature existed!!! The bug I mean...... If one of those landed on me, I'd scream like a little girl, and wet my pants too!!! Snakes, bugs, and pigs---you can keep 'em!!!! But thanks for taking care of the owl

Yuck, I seen those before, just no idea what they were called. I saved a baby flicker from a hawk and brought the bird inside to recover for a bit and had a couple of those flies in the bathroom, where I had the bird. I notice they were flat, fast and couldn't be killed with a fly swatter. Eventually I got out the scotch tape and when I caught them I encased them in it (like some people do with wood ticks) and they went out in the garbage.
