I've been going through my MP3 collection, reliving some memories in the wake of my recent break-up and thought it would be nice to have a thread that gets away from the "life issues" that plague us. Is it really just me or has "Life" become a little more depressing lately? Remember when we used to have some fun game type threads in here? Well, maybe it's time to get something new going here that everyone can enjoy participating in... My idea is for us to post popular song names or lyrics that have rock or lapidaty references. (open to some interpretaion of course) Basically, as long as it rocks and has to do with rocks, it's fair game so give 'er! If "rules" are really going to be necessary I guess we'll have to make them up as we go. For now, let's just see what happens... Have fun, and don't let "Life" get you down. Rob ... Alright alright, I guess it's only fair that I should start it off then... America - A Horse With No NameOn the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life. There were plants and birds and rocks and things. There was sand and hills and rings.
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz and a sky with no clouds. The heat was hot and the ground was dry but the air was full of sound.
*chorus* I've been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can't remember your name 'cause there ain't no-one for to give you no pain. *
After two days in the desert sun my skin began to turn red. After three days in the desert sun I was looking at a river bed. And the story it told of a river that flowed made me sad to think it was dead.
*chorus* After nine days I let the horse run free 'cause the desert had turned to sea. There were plants and birds and rocks and things. There was sand and hills and rings. The ocean is a desert with its life underground and a perfect disguise above.
Under the cities, lies a heart made of ground but the humans will give it no love.
*chorus*That one had a couple of rock references at least. I'm sure some here can do better so now YOU give it a go!

Who else but Mr. Seger and the silver bullet band - Like a rock
Stood there boldly Sweatin' in the sun Felt like a million Felt like number one The height of summer I'd never felt that strong Like a rock
I was eighteen Didn't have a care Working for peanuts Not a dime to spare But I was lean and Solid everywhere Like a rock
My hands were steady My eyes were clear and bright My walk had purpose My steps were quick and light And I held firmly To what I felt was right Like a rock
Like a rock, I was strong as I could be Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me Like a rock, I was something to see Like a rock
And I stood arrow straight Unencumbered by the weight Of all these hustlers and their schemes I stood proud, I stood tall High above it all I still believed in my dreams
Twenty years now Where'd they go? twenty years I don't know sit and I wonder sometimes Where they've gone
And sometimes late at night When I'm bathed in the firelight The moon comes callin' a ghostly white And I recall recall
Like a rock. standin' arrow straight Like a rock, chargin' from the gate Like a rock, carryin' the weight Like a rock
Lihe a rock, the sun upon my skin Like a rock, hard against the wind Like a rock, I see myself again Like a rock

I like this thread. Here's one.
Who wants to bu-u-uy this diamond ri-i-i-ing? She took it off her finger, now it doesn't mean a thi-i-i-ng This diamond ring doesn't shine for me anymore And this diamond ring doesn't mean what it meant before So if you've got someone whose love is tru-u-ue Let it shine for yo-ou-ou
This stone is genuine like love should be-e-e-e And if your baby's truer than my baby was to me-e-e-e This diamond ring can mean something beautiful And this diamond ring can mean dreams that are coming true And then your heart won't have to break like mine did If there's love behind it
This diamond ring can mean something beautiful And this diamond ring can mean dreams that are coming true And then your heart won't have to break like mine did If there's love behind it
This diamond ring doesn't shine for me anymore And this diamond ring doesn't mean what it meant before
So if you've got someone whose love is tru-u-ue Let it shine for yo-ou-ou

And another by my main man Neil Young.
"Rockin' In The Free World"
There's colors on the street Red, white and blue People shufflin' their feet People sleepin' in their shoes But there's a warnin' sign on the road ahead There's a lot of people sayin' we'd be better off dead Don't feel like Satan, but I am to them So I try to forget it, any way I can.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world.
I see a woman in the night With a baby in her hand Under an old street light Near a garbage can Now she puts the kid away, and she's gone to get a hit She hates her life, and what she's done to it There's one more kid that will never go to school Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world.
We got a thousand points of light For the homeless man We got a kinder, gentler, Machine gun hand We got department stores and toilet paper Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive.
Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world Keep on rockin' in the free world, Keep on rockin' in the free world.

What about.....
One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock, rock, Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock, rock, Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, rock, We're gonna rock around the clock tonight.
Put your glad rags on and join me, hon, We'll have some fun when the clock strikes one, We're gonna rock around the clock tonight, We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight. We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.
When the clock strikes two, three and four, If the band slows down we'll yell for more, We're gonna rock around the clock tonight, We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight. We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.
When the chimes ring five, six and seven, We'll be right in seventh heaven. We're gonna rock around the clock tonight, We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight. We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.
When it's eight, nine, ten, eleven too, I'll be goin' strong and so will you. We're gonna rock around the clock tonight, We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight. We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.
When the clock strikes twelve, we'll cool off then, Start a rockin' round the clock again. We're gonna rock around the clock tonight, We're gonna rock, rock, rock, 'til broad daylight. We're gonna rock, gonna rock, around the clock tonight.

Still more...one by the Stylistics....
If I could I'd like to be A great big movie star Overnight sensation Drive a big expensive car I would buy you everything Your little heart desires These things I do ‘Cause I'm stone in love with you (Stone in love with you)
If I were a business man I'd sit behind a desk I'd be so successful I would scare Wall Street to death I would hold a meeting for The press to let them know I did it all ‘Cause I'm stone in love with you (Stone in love with you)
I'm just a man, an average man Doing everything the best I can But if I could, I'd give the world to you
I'd like to someday be the owner of The first house on the moon There would be no neighbors And no population boom You might say that all I do Is dream my life away I guess it's true ‘Cause I'm stone in love with you I guess it's true ‘Cause I'm stone in love with you I guess it's true ‘Cause I'm stone in love with you

i'm in:
Earth, Wind and Fire, "In the Stone"
I found that love, provides The key-unlocks, the heart and souls, of you and me- Love will love, to sing your song, Love is written in the stone
Every man, I meet is walking time- Free to wander, past his conscious mind, Love will come, and take you home- Love is written, in the stone Do you believe, my friend, in what you claim, people of the world, All doubt the same-bringing questions Of their own-truth is written, In the stone
In the stone, youll find the meaning Why youre not standing tall In the stone The light is shining, forever touching all-
Life experience a passing day Time will witness, what the ole Folks say-getting stronger every day -strenght is written in the stone- Deep inside, our hearts for us To keep-lies a spark of light that Never sleeps The greatest, youve ever known- Yea is written- In the stone
In the stone, youll find the meaning Why youre not standing tall In the stone The light is shining, forever touching all- Never, never my darling, never youll Be alone-forever, ever my darling True love is written in the stone-
i am SO dating myself with this one.....

this could get addicting, thanks a lot, Rob!
Simon and Garfunkel, "I am a Rock"
A winters day In a deep and dark december; I am alone, Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow. I am a rock, I am an island. Ive built walls, A fortress deep and mighty, That none may penetrate. I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain. Its laughter and its loving I disdain. I am a rock, I am an island.
Dont talk of love, But Ive heard the words before; Its sleeping in my memory. I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died. If I never loved I never would have cried. I am a rock, I am an island.
I have my books And my poetry to protect me; I am shielded in my armor, Hiding in my room, safe within my womb. I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain; And an island never cries.
ok...i will (try to) stop now........

Bit obvious but here goes - Papa Was a Rolling Stone by The Temptations: It was the third of September. That day I'll always remember, yes I will. 'Cause that was the day that my daddy died. I never got a chance to see him. Never heard nothing but bad things about him. Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth. And Mama just hung her head and said, "Son, Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." "Papa was a rolling stone, my son. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." Well, well Hey Mama, is it true what they say, that Papa never worked a day in his life? And Mama, some bad talk going around town saying that Papa had three outside children and another wife. And that ain't right. Hey, talk about Papa doing some store front preaching. Talked about saving souls and all the time leeching. Dealing in debt and stealing in the name of the Lord. Mama just hung her head and said, "Papa was a rolling stone, my son. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." "Hey, Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." Ugh Hey Mama, I heard Papa called himself a jack of all trades. Tell me is that what sent Papa to an early grave? Folks say Papa would beg, borrow, steal to pay his bills. Hey Mama, folks say that Papa was never much on thinking. Spent most of his life chasing women and drinking. Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth. And Mama looked up with a tear in her eye and said, "Son, Papa was a rolling stone. (Well, well, well, well) Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone, lone, lone, lone, alone." "Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." "I said, Papa was a rolling stone. Wherever he laid his hat was his home. (And when he died) All he left us was alone." I've just read that through and it is probably not as "happy" as it could be but we all like to roll stones here so hey ho.

Hey Rob... Speaking of Lapidary references in literature. There is a series of 'fantasy-fiction' novels by a young author named Daniel Paublini Christopher Paolini (thx KD). He wrote the first one titled 'Eragon' at 15 years of age. You may have seen the horrible movie that was made from it. The novel is sooo much better than the movie. Anyway, all throughout his books are references to various minerals and lapidary materials, some of which I would have missed without a lttle knowledge of the subject. The author must have some interest in lapidary himself I would think. In fact the story begins when the main character finds a mysterious gem stone in the forest that turns out to be a dragons egg. Posted in the spirit of this thread... Thought you might enjoy.... Dan

Electric Light Orchestra - Turn To Stone
The city streets are empty now. The lights don't shine no more. And so the songs are way down low. Turning, turning, turning.
A sound that flows into my mind. The echoes of the daylight. Of everything that is alive, in my blue world.
*Chorus* I turn to stone when you are gone. I turn to stone.
Turn to stone. When you comin' home? I can't go on. *
The dying embers of the night. A fire that slowly fades til dawn. Still glow upon the wall so bright . Turning, turning, turning.
The tired streets that hide away. From here to everywhere they go. Roll past my door into the day. In my blue world.
*chorus*
I turn to stone, when you are gone. I turn to stone.
Yes i'm turning to stone 'cuz you ain't coming home. Why you ain't coming home if i'm turning to stone? You've been gone for so long, and I can't carry on . Yes i'm turning, i'm turning, i'm turning to stone.
The dancing shadows on the wall. The two-step in the hall. Are all I see since you've been gone. Turning, turning, turning.
Through all I sit here and I wait. I turn to stone, I turn to stone. You will return again some day. To my blue world.
*chorus*
I turn to stone, when you are gone. I turn to stone.
*chorus*
I turn to stone, when you are gone. I turn to stone.

Elton John - Crocodile Rock
I remember when rock was young. Me and Suzie had so much fun, holding hands and skipping stones. Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own .
But the biggest kick I ever got, was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock. While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock, we were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock. *chorus* Well Croc Rocking the song would shout, when your feet just can't keep still. I never knew me a better time and I guess I never will.
Oh mama mama those Friday nights, when Suzie wore her dresses tight and, the Crocodile Rocking was out of sight. *
(la, la-la-la-la...)
But the years went by and the rock just died. Suzie went and left us for some foreign guy. Long nights crying by the record machine, dreaming of my Chevy and my old blue jeans. But they'll never kill the thrills we've got, burning oil to the Crocodile Rock . Learning fast as the weeks went past. we really thought the Crocodile Rock would last.
*chorus* (la, la-la-la-la...)

There's really no other references except in the title and the first line so I won't bother to post the entire lyrics.
