What about import duties? I bring this up because on a model railroad forum I am in, a guy in Sweden has complained that he, in addition to paying shipping from US dealers, also has to pay an import duty before his P.O. will give him the package. Hopefully someone else knows more about this because I just said all I know. It may not even apply here (this guy's purchases are a couple hundred dollars).
A question: There are certain circumstances that may cause me to be unable to participate, I don't know yet, so how late can one sign up?
(PS: I've must have been asleep! I just noticed this thread today)

Most countries do not charge import duties if it is a gift. If the receiving party paid for it then they pay based on the cost of the item.
We got snow here this weekend, it all melted, but its coming...............Tony

Hopefully someone else knows more about this because I just said all I know. It may not even apply here (this guy's purchases are a couple hundred dollars). A question: There are certain circumstances that may cause me to be unable to participate, I don't know yet, so how late can one sign up? (PS: I've must have been asleep! I just noticed this thread today) KG--If anyone needs to send a gift overseas from the US, here is what I found out: - Use the short format Customs Form available at all local POs in US
- Indicate contents of box or padded envelope is a gift
- When describing the gift simply write rocks and stones or rock specimens
- Give a low value to the gift--$5.00 to $10.00 USD
I used this tactic when I sent the prizes to Harry, Adrian, and Bill and unless they aren't telling me about problems they had, I think it worked. (I had received advice on this from several folks here at RTH who regularly send packages overseas and this is what they suggested I do.) Now, on to your second concern... You can delay committing until November 21st and if you can afford $8.95 at that point there are several RTHers who can send out a gift box within the US in your name, IF you do not have enough "stuff" of your own to send to someone else. No one is required to send a box of rocks, however. Based on the excitemment noted after any of the competitions here at RTH, and sometimes after a surprise package has been received, there are VERY FEW RTHers who would not be happy with a slab, or a polished cab, or some tumbled or rough stones, or some other small item that would travel very safely in a padded envelope. Again, using the P of I Contest as my reference point: I mailed about 10 prizes in padded envelopes (after first wrapping each piece in bubble-wrap for extra safe handling) and the most expensive envelope was sent for about $4.00 First Class. (These were all for winners living in the US.) Parcel Post reduces prices; there is also a Flat Rate Envelope. I hope this info allays your concerns. I believe everyone who is joining in on the fun of the gift exchange is doing it to spread the famous RTH Good Will around and around--not to out-do another giver or demean a receiver. This is really about the SPIRIT of sharing and that has no declarable monetary value. As for missing this post--this gets buried quickly because there are always so many neat threads on the Life Board. That's why Steve asked me to help him with his neat plan for the Gift Exchange--he knows I tend to be (ahem) persistent. Every few days I bump it back to the top of the Board...AND this thread isn't even the main Sign-Up thread. This one is just a Heads-Up sort of thing. The REAL thread won't start until Mid-October and then it will get bumped up every day! Lady B

Today is THE Day!!! Yep, today is October 14, 2007! That’s the OFFICIAL start-up date for the SIGN-UP for the Sort-of-Secret Holiday Gift Exchange! There’s a new thread starting today but just before we leave this one, I thought I would do a final recap! - Wayne—You made some really great points re: details for the Gift Exchange. Thanks for bringing them up. I think everyone will have a pretty good idea of how to avoid any pitfalls based on what I wrote in my response to your post. Just in case some RTHers want more info, here’s a link to a problem encountered when an RTHer in the USA tried to send something to a Member in Canada. It wasn’t easy!!!
forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=buysell&action=display&thread=1191622728&page=1
- Mitzi—I can already hear the tintinnabulation of the Bells, Bells, Bells!! You are definitely in…We like Bells!
- Stones— You’re in! Hope you do find it to be lots of FUN!!!
- Stefan—Those are the very details I am going to be looking for in the PMs I am asking each of the “In” Members to send me during the official sign-up period.
- Dave—You haven’t missed anything yet! There’s still plenty of time to join the fun! ;D
Okay, the Elves are clamoring for the New Thread—the OFFICAL SIGN-UP—gotta jump in my sleigh and it’s Hi! Ho! Silver! Away! (Hey, we don’t have reindeer here in Florida. I have to use what’s available! ) Lady B
