Austin is not really the armpit of Texas, it's much lower than that. I'm just trying to be nice. I won't go into the details of why the entire city should be picked up and placed next to San Francisco. This is the part that is of interest to rockhounds.
The city of Austin recently passed a law that all rocks and minerals inside the city limits are the property of the city. Even on private land! And they are enforcing this asinine law.
Is the city sending out employees to pick up these beautiful rocks and placing them in a natural history museum? Nope, they are letting them be covered up with concrete. Is it just me, or does this somehow make sense to anyone on this planet other than Austin law makers?
For years I've been telling anyone that will listen, we are loosing our freedoms by the minute. Please, please pay attention to what is going on. Vote in the next election. If the person you vote for screws up, vote him OUT!
Curt

This law is true to some extent nation wide. For instance, I can't legaly dig for agates in my back yard. Unless it is unsightly no one would stop me but I can't do it lawfully. The state and federal governments own all mineral rights and they must be purchased from them.
Not so long ago the national debt was based on America's gold as collateral. When the gold standard was dropped the collateral for the national debt reverted to the land that we stand on. You may hold the deed to your land free and clear and there may never be any question about it, but it isn't realy yours.

Rocky
Here in Texas, we own the mineral rights to our land unless we sell them to someone else.

Hey Curt, Quit your whining...at least you have rocks worth digging...even if it is illegal...all I can get is granite.
Just kidding... seems like a bad law
