I've never been sure if Guy Fawkes Day was in commemoration of the discovery of the treason (prior to its enactment) or in celebration of Guy Fawkes.
Basically, Guy Fawkes and some others attempted to blow up the Parliament building and kill King James I in order to bring down the Protestant government. It was supposed to happen at the stroke of midnight on November 5th.
Right?

I found this..
A common phrase is that Fawkes was "the only man to ever enter parliament with honourable intentions".
He meant to blow it up, right?
Hmm..

Yep, Guy was a member of a group who plotted to blow up parliament (called the Gunpowder Plot which if it had been successful would have been possibly the biggest attack in British history!) but they got found out and the plotters were rounded up. Guy was tortured until he confessed and then he was hung until semi-conscious, drawn around the streets by a rope and then cut into four pieces (hung, drawn and quartered).
The celebration is really about the plot not happening but there was also a religious undertone to the plot as the plotters were Catholic and wanted to remove the Protestant King and Parliament.

If I remember my readings correctly, the plotters actually managed to place a large stash of gun powder under Parliament and just had to light the fuse. The authorities got wind of the plot and were laying in wait for whoever came to light the fuse, which happened to be Fawkes who along with the other plotters met with a brutal end. I think 17th century??

The basement of the U.S of A. House of Congress is well guarded to prevent a like happening.

Rich - I carved 3 pumpkins - one big one for the outside of the house, and two small ones for the kids. James said "Dad - your pumkin looks cross!!" (which I found funny). Neither of the small pumpkins made it out of the house and onto the rounds of trickntreating - I think the boys are more into carrying their buckets and ensuring they are filled with sweets as opposed to messing with burning candles. This..... is a relief in a way. The large pumkin was hung outside the house and it looked a sorry state as whilst the candles remained lit - water poured off it as it chucked it down all night!!!!

Loads of fireworks, no kids at home anymore so we watched everyone elses. The local kids don't come here on Halloween we live in the witches house. Plus we have the big bad dog.
