LOL Oriongal! I get that too. Prior to last week, I did IT for a company handling all sorts of problems (build, debug, & maintain) and had a lot of flack for being a girl.
cpdad, perhaps I should have been clearer. NONE of the XPs will handle more than 2GB memory unless you're willing to edit a few files. Vista does (and needs it!). But XP Home tops out at 2GB, and XP Pro tops out at 2GB unless you're willing to tinker with the boot.ini file (at which point it tops out at 4GB).
And yeah - what LCARS said about hard drive speed. The SATA IIs are pretty decent there (300GB/sec).
One thing I've learned with building gaming systems...heck, any computer...you don't really want what's on the bleeding edge. The bleeding edge tends to still have ouches and require bandaids. One step less than the bleeding edge is REAL nice, though.
As for gaming systems versus bulk boxed computers...a gamer is going to want a machine that he's (she's ;D ) chosen every piece that goes in that machine. I'd recommend Dell or a few other big brands for a basic home machine (or even an office machine), but not to a gamer. I've seen the Dell gaming machines, and I can build a nicer one for less than they charge.
