I know its thanksgiving time in the US and this is a long shot at best but does anyone live near Ellensburg or Yakima Washington who would be willing to take a little drive to a riverside rest stop on Canyon Rd. for me?
All I need is someone who can stand in one place, take a few different (preferably zoom) pictures in a certain direction and be able to tell me if one or more tall poles is visbile in the distance, preferrably with binocs if you have them.
In case you're wondering why I would ask someone to do this other than me having gone completely off my rocker, it's because me and a couple of friends are back at doing these crazy international co-op GPS adventure contests. ;D
We just need a few photos taken in the right place and it's easy to get to once you're there. I can give you foolproof directions to the spot if you don't have a GPS. A compass would be handy if you have one so you know you are looking in the right direction to take the pics but basically there's only two directions you can look down a canyon anyway and I can provide a virtual 3D view of the area and where to look courtesy of Google Earth.
I know it's a bit of a drive from either city and it's almost smack in between them but I was hoping maybe someone would be travelling around there in the next little while and perhaps by some miracle, be able to stop over during the day some time and take a few zoom pics then email them to me.
There are of course some more complicated sighting and measurement steps involved with this location but we are trying to work around them using GE to tell us where things should be. I don't expect any of you to have laser surveying instruments that would determine the exact location of where we have to go here but a general idea of just what objects at what distances are visible, it would significantly narrow down the areas we'd have to search.
We may be able to get around doing the complex measurements at the site but we will still eventually need photos taken from the real location. Our team is trying to get a jump start on this to try and stay ahead of the competition, which can get pretty gnarly sometimes but that only makes it more exciting!
The contest that this is part of is only paying $300 though so the idea is to find someone close to the area who is willing to do that step so the Vancouver Island team can do their steps, although it is not unheard of for teams here to sometimes drive to some of the US locations themselves. We would easilly burn $300 worth of gas and ferry expenses just going there and back, not including an overnight stay anywhere if we tried to do this.
So, if there is anyone near this area who is interested and wants to help, maybe we can work something out so our team can help cover your expenses for the trip.
Please reply here with comments or questions or PM me if you prefer and I'll explain & answer any questions and give further details and instructions as needed. I will be at home sporatically over the next couple of days since I am working on local components of this contest by process of elimination and searching on a very long line instead of having exact co-ordinates but that's all we have to work with for now so that's what we're doing.
If we find what we're looking for here first, we should be able to tell you what exactly you'd be looking for there but it really doesn't matter at this point because we won't give up until we find what we're looking for and we still need the pics.
Thanks for the read and the occasional post to keep this on page 1 for a few days.
