This bird landed at a friends house in Houston. Any idea what it is?

Just off the top of my tongue, it looks like a juvenile Red Tailed (Rufus?) Hawk? Wonderful pix! I'll get back to ya soon. How fun!

Nope: Adult Red Shouldered Hawk. We're training a Juvenile of that species right now and have a permanent party adult female in our Ed program...Mel

Beautiful pic indeed! Very common hawk here in Ojai and we took in about 65 for rehab last year. Sort of a smaller woodland form of the Red Tailed Hawk and one of the smaller hawks in the Buteo group. The Ferruginous would be more common in Nebraska but is a monster big Buteo and likes to spend more time in open fields and on the ground than the Red Shouldered Hawk does....Mel
PS: Karen you should have lots of Red tailed Hawks in your area too as they occur commonly nationwide.

Nice photo there!!
I see these quite often here. Several years ago I was fooling around in my garage and heard a crash and glass tinkling. I went in the backyard to see what happened. At first I didn't see anything, but then noticed what looked like a brown ball on the ground by a broken bedroom window. I started to walk closer and the "ball" raised its head and I thought, " A bird! A hawk!" It staggered around a bit and then flew to a tree in the neighbor's yard. It sat there a time looking at me and I looking at it. Then it flew away. Happy to see it wasn't hurt.
Only thing I could think of was that maybe it was diving at something and misjudged its rate of climb or hit a nearby clothes line which interrupted its flight path. The window was a normal sized bedroom window, the blinds were closed, and its under a fairly wide eave.
