I set up my table last night at the art gallery what will be handling my woodturnings in their Fine Craft show this holiday season. My display is pretty amateurish compared to the other displays but this is my first time in a shop of this caliper. Here is my table. Here is one with me slouching by the table. LOL I think my turnings are middle of the road compared to the other items there. The quilt on the wall behind my table is a hand dyed silk mosaic, it sells for $1300. My highest priced piece is about $250. I was disappointed by a lot of the jewelry there. Most looks to be cabs and beads bought off of ebay and assembled by the "artist". I think my wifes stuff is nicer and more inventive but she doesn't have a "following". LOL I didn't see one cab even close to the caliber of the stuff I see here. I will post some pics of the pieces sometime next week. Tomorrow is the opening reception and I will be there for 8 hours so I will need something to do besides stand next to my table looking like a dork. LOL Besides I have laryngitis and can't talk to customers anyway. Thanks for looking. Tony M

WOW! Tony! That is an impressive display, beautifully balanced and complemented very nicely by the mosaic quilt. And how neat...if anyone comes looking specifically for wall hangings they can't help but see your beautiful work as well. Only problem I see with the layout is that I don't see any of your wonderfully-worked toadstools. I know what you charged me and I firmly believe you could get five time that amount for the tiniest one alone. People come to that Gallery with the intent to buy art and your woodworking is definitely ART!!! Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the laryngitis and please do keep us posted on how the Gallery experience turns out for you. Sending you lots and lots of good wishes for a happy and successful exhibit! Lady B

Here's a thought, Tony; customers will see the price tag on the quilt (!!!), and decide $250 is a pretty DARN good deal for a potential family heirloom. And, altho I do admire the work of art behind your works of art, I do like works of art that are practical and serve a purpose; you can put pretty rocks in your works of art! Beautiful display, beautiful turnings!

Tony,
I think your display looks great. As LadyB said, its nicely balanced and i like how you have some of the bowls elevated on wrapped "gifts".
I must admit, I was looking for toadstools in your display as well. You must not have had any left as you sent them all to Kate and I LOL.

Lady B & Shannon, you are the only two people who I have ever sold mushrooms to. I doubt that they would be a big seller around here. Another reason I didn't put any in the show was the restictions, $30 and up. I also like to keep some of my work more personal. For instance I never ever sell boxes. I like to give them as special gifts for people so those who get one from me appreciate them more. I think I will only sell mushrooms to people who ask for them. Thanks to your posts there is someone else here interested in some, so now three RTHers will have my shrooms, the only ones that don't live in my home.

Great display table, Tony! One can almost feel the warm and the smoothness of your works.

Thanks all. I wasn't happy with this display so I brought in the big guns, my wife and mother. I left them alone for half an hour and this is what I got A world of difference between my silly attempt and theirs. My wife has worked retail for years and my mother did craft shows for 20 years so they brought in a lot of experience, and props. I love the new display. I sold 3 small pieces at the opening so at least that is a start.

It does look good, Tony. But I think you did pretty well by yourself. Hell, you got a A- just for spreading a tablecloth. Woulda been an A+++++ if you'd ironed it. ;D When something's sold, does it just get stickered till the end of the show? Or does the buyer get to take it right away, so you kinda hafta 'replace stock'? Good luck for the rest of the show. Rich

Hmm...how to comment without offending someone....
I am a proponent of the "Less is More" approach when it comes to layout and design. I liked your display, Tony, because it was balanced and my eyes were immediately drawn to your turned pieces.
Now my eye is immediately drawn to the stars on the cover and the slope and the shawl on one end and the dark cloth on the other. There is no more balance in the layout and the tall candle sticks are blocking one of your most attractive bowls. (They are also interrupting the view of the quilt behind and above your display which in your original layout perfectly complemented your display.)
I think your display went from inviting to cluttered. And I, too, speak from experience...I have won Gold and Silver Addy Awards for advertising design.
Your instincts worked beautifully for the gallery in which you are displaying your pieces. You should listen to your instincts.
And that is my unasked for 2 cents!

Rich, they take it right away. I have to replace items if I can. That's going to be a bit of a problem since this represents 2 years worth of work, minus the pieces I can't part with.
Lady B, of course I respect you opinion. I also think that the first display showed the pieces off better but it was jarring compared to the other displays in the show. I wanted to be more in unison with the gallery. Its a pretty high end gallery and they expect the displays to be high end too. The one I did was using stuff from the dollar store, not quite high end. Its funny you mention the stars because a lady at the opening reception was interested in what they were made from, she couldn't care less about the turnings. LOL She was the exception though. The gallery likes the new layout better and that is what was important to me. I am hoping to do well enough that they choose me to be one of thier permament artists.

Ah, Tony, I should have asked you for more pics of others' layouts before I offered my two cents. If the gallery likes your second layout better so be it.
Every gallery has its own ambience. When I was involved in gallery layout and design (under my designer name "What a Woman! Designs" I tried to showcase the artists so that their individual works stood out, each in its own right.
Regardless of the layout, I think you know I am wishing you every absolute morsel of success; not just for this show but for your future endeavors--with whatever gallery is lucky enough to display your artistry.

Thanks Lady B. Like I said I am always glad to hear other opinions. I might be a decent woodturner but I'm not a marketer and never plan to be so any advice is always helpful.
