The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.
A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division. Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number, what does it mean?
A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528. B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787. C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.
Washington , D.C . HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

I agree, we have spent way too much money on Iraq. But if it wasn't that, it would be something else. Because we have spent billions on Iraq, we should just keep on keeping on? I'm upset from begining to end. From Congressmen who have the best healthcare and pension in the world and their pockets filled by special interest groups to the small town mayor who has his pockets filled by the local business owners.
If we would vote out EVERY person that holds an office in every election for several elections, they would get the message eventually.

My argument is that we should spend the money in our country, on our people, and pumping up our economy. Spending on rebuilding New Orleans does that, spending on healthcare for US citizens does that. Spending on social programs that put people to work or trains US citizens to do meaningful work does that. Spending on unemployment for people on a bad strealk does that. Spending money on education to keep the USA citizens on par and ahead of the rest of the world does that. Spending money on alternative energy and research does that.
PS - The 400 -500 billion estimate may be low but I didn't want anyone thinking I was blowing the Iraq numbers up high

Once again, I agree. We give every little podunk country in the world billions of dollars a year so they can buy more arms to fight us with. We are trying to buy friendship and that will never work in the long run, only as a short term measure. We are in the process of making China the largest and most powerful super power on earth. Does that make sense?
Giving New Orleans enough money to make every man, woman, and child semi-rich doesn't make sense either. You know darn well the people there that really need it are NOT going to get it. Also, there is the probablity that it will happen again and there goes another 250 billion to the politicans and their buddies.
MY point is make congress responsible. If they want money, they need to have a plan and use that plan, not just grab a huge sum out of the air and make all the dirty people even richer than what they already are.
Since the minimum wage was increased, congress has given themselves 10 pay raises. How's that for taking care of the little people. Democrats and Republicans alike.
The Iraq war costs are just a very small part of the waste that's going on. It has been like this for years and years and it just keeps getting worse. Our Liberties are being taken away from us daily and it's costing us more and more.
Vote NO. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more.
Curt

Chas and Curt - No argument with anything you say. Curt: "If you will notice, very few people have responded to this thread." Might be Christmas. Or maybe we're all so preoccupied with every minute by minute development leading up to the Iowa caucuses, where six or seven percent of registered voters might determine the fate of the free world . . . or so you'd think, given the media coverage. ;D Don't know if I wanna laugh or cry. How's that for ludicrous - a two-year campaign(bullshit) cycle for something that should be over and done with in a month!! I think the ol' founding fathers would shoot themselves in the head if they saw the depths to which this government/system has sunk. Anyone else watch that two-hour show on Ralph Nader last night ( Independent Lens on PBS)? Rich

I do know freedom ain't free but I still wish someone would save us from all these crooked politicians who seem so determined to manage our lives and money for us ( talking about both parties here). Guess you could say things could always work better. But then, I watch something like the special about Darfar playing on HBO right now and see the poor Christian native complaining that thieves from "His" government raided his village and stole all his stuff. His stuff consisted of a mattress, a metal pot and like a spoon, everything he had in the world! Since the government has all the guns, they raped and killed half his relatives too. Looking at things from that perspective, our government looks pretty damn good to this ole boy. And, it sure makes me like the party best what leaves our personal firearms alone......Mel

Boy Curt, I'd like to think we can. I always have voted, though I switched parties once I saw what was going on and got older and smarter, but honestly we're fighting a corporately funded governing body where it has become impossible to be elected without immense financial backing that ultimately corrupts every candidate for every office. And the next generation, from what I've seen. most them don't believe change is possible or don't care as long as they have some money to spend. or worst of all, let the TV and the blogs think for them and direct their votes. I'm sixty now and don't have kids to worry about so I just have to think about myself and my wife. Feel sorry for all you folks raising another generation cause I'm afraid the young'uns are in for some real nasty times ahead. My favorite prof in college who was a biogeographer and brilliant, said it best when he stated, '"All life is a competition for resources". That is so true and unfortunately, this nations resources are drying up while Russia and China have huge untouched reserves. Won't be too long before the battle for resources and survival heats up and I don't think the next generation has the stomach for it because quite simply, they've had too much too easily for too long *sigh*....mel
Oh and Cpdad, Your boy is dead right. Anybody who knows anything about warfare knows you can't hold foreign ground against a well armed and organized insurgent force without immense cost in money and lives. The Soviet Union failed because of the war in Afghanistan and the Afghans were poorly funded whereas all those Mideastern countries are secretly or not so secretly funding the Iraq and Afghan insurgents. And the Soviets were ruthless. Our country is too PC to hurt the enemy enough to win a war but has committed themselves too deeply to admit they are wrong! Just my simple opinion of course. End of rant....Mel

I believe in God. I believe in Christ. I believe in Christmas. I believe in America. I believe God has shed His grace on thee, even when you are at your worst; you still stand far above all the rest. I believe we live in this prosperity only because God has blessed us for honoring Him. I believe this has been drastically changing. I believe we can change it back and I believe it will take drastic measures.
In April 1787, Benjamin Franklin talking to Congress, said: “I have lived a long time, sir, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this, that God governs in the affairs of man, and, if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, how can a great empire rise without his aid?" Ben Franklin had his doubts about Christ, but he could not deny that this country was great because it was built on Biblical standards. Yes, standards they themselves could not and did not completely live by, I believe no man can, well there was one.
In the past 50 years we have seen huge increases in violent crimes, government corruption, drug use, teenage pregnancy, and divorce. We have also seen God taken out of our schools, our courtrooms, our workplaces and even out of Christmas. The sins of our nation rise as high as the heavens. Pornography, adultery, and homosexuality have become accepted ways to express our God-given sensual desires. Rape, murder, and rage have filled our streets, and our schools. The school system teaches our children they are descendant from animals and there is no God. Is there any wonder why they act like Godless animals? We have left the standard. We have chosen our own path. In spite of all this I still believe America is great and I believe she can be much, much greater.
We still feed the starving, release the captive, heal the sick. We still promote democracy, freedom, and peace. We restrain the use of our might by seeking not to conquer peoples, but to liberate them, help them, and support them. We have sacrificed our own sons and daughters so that the world can know peace, prosperity, and happiness. Our Founders were led by God Almighty to establish a nation unlike any ever seen before and likely never to be seen again. As a young country America stunned the world with her productivity, education, and technology. Yet as she grows older she has turned her back on God. I believe we have pushed the hedge of God's protection away from our borders. I believe it can be restored.
Ever since "J" arose from the dead that first Easter Sunday, somebody or other has been trying to suppress the “J” word and the “C” word. I believe God has given him a name which is above every name: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father.” I believe this day is closer than it was yesterday.
On July 4, 1776, 56 men representing about 3 million people signed perhaps the most revolutionary document in history: The Declaration of Independence. These men placed conviction above convenience. Some of them lost their homes, their families, their fortunes, and their lives. Although Christians have lost much ground in this nation, I believe we owe it to our forefathers who sacrificed so much to establish this nation on Godly Christian principles to gain back this lost territory.
I believe we can start by putting Christ back into Christmas, back into our hearts, homes, schools, jobs and government. I believe by saying Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays we exalt and glorify God. I believe if we acknowledge that we as a person, that we as a country, celebrate the birth of a Savior and hold Him sacred, build our lives, families and country on His foundation. God's grace will again be shed on us all. I believe that by inviting Him to His own birthday party and back into our hearts, we can begin to reverse the trend and again to be one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Oh come let us adore Him.

John...
I agree whole-heartedly with everything you wrote about this nation's rise to greatness while observing christian values. The more those values are ignored/repressed the worse of this nation is becoming.
